15-21 December 2023 If you like heat, don't mind a 10 hour drive to the Kalahari, want to spend your stay right on the Orange River - then visit the Khamkirri resort - just outside Kakamas, Kalahari. From 15 - 21 December 2023, we stayed in a 2-sleeper chalet at Khamkirri. Day temperatures are around 40 oC - do not think you'll cool down in the shower - there's NO cold water in the taps. At all. Not even at bedtime or early morning – even the toilet flushes hot!!! The chalet has a big open-plan kitchen and lounge (with aircon) and big folding doors that open up to the undercover patio with a built-in braai, as well as a table and chairs. Bedroom has big bed, but sadly (well, for me anyway) not NEARLY enough space for clothes. I made do, but it was a stretch. . Big restaurant on premises - closes between 3 and 6pm. Didn't eat there, but enjoyed a cold one on the patio right next to the river. They have lovely walking trails and wild, although I only managed to see Springboks on 1 of my walks.
December 2010 At the chalet, I was shocked but not altogether surprised to find there was no storage whatsoever – not even for groceries. The bathroom has a shower, toilet and basin and luckily enough shelves for toiletries. In the main area there is a double bed, a single bed mattress on a concrete base, a small fridge and then a concrete counter with small oven-cum-stove and kettle. Cutlery consists of 2 knives, 2 steak knives, 4 forks, 2 dessert spoons, 2 teaspoons, 1 serving spoon, 1 tin opener, braai tongs. 1 Pan, 1 medium pot and 1 braai dish. No aircon, but a air cooler (just like a fan). First I packed the few cans I brought from home with plunger and basic groceries on the concrete bench. Then I hung our shirts/blouses in the camp wardrobe with a few shelves for undies. The rest of our clothes went into one of our black crates on top of the single bed with more heaps of clothes next to it. As well as our stack of books. My earrings I hung on the chicken wire of one window (girl has to have earrings.) One morning up at 5am, had coffee and a rusk, showered and dressed for the quad bike game drive at 7. They gave me the biggest one cause it was easiest to manoeuvre. I made a few circles to try it out and then we were off. I managed to keep the petrol button steady. We saw lots of Springbok as well as a baby springbok. Blesbok, small-built Elande, Zebra and the trail of a very big Iguana. The sun was up but not hot. At 2 places I had a mild attack of panic – we didn’t wear helmets and there were loose rocks in the road, but otherwise I actually quite enjoyed it. After an hour, we returned to the camp. Over the few days, it rained and the river's water level rose quite high! Across the river, parking spots were flooded. We left on 4 January 2011 - and right after that our chalets flooded and people were...

Khamkirri offers an exceptional experience, blending spacious comfort with stunning natural beauty. I stayed in one of their immaculate cabins, and I was thoroughly impressed. The cabin is perfectly designed, with a double-volume roof that creates a sense of openness and airiness. The beds—both a massive double and a single—were incredibly comfortable, and the air conditioning in every room ensured that we stayed cool despite the heat.
The kitchenette was extremely well-equipped, making it easy to prepare meals if desired, though the restaurant onsite was too good to miss. The patio, which overlooks the river, was spacious and had a braai area—perfect for enjoying the outdoors while watching the incredible sunsets and sunrises. These views were nothing short of spectacular, and the option to take a booze cruise at sunset was a real treat.
The food at the restaurant was absolutely delicious, with large portions and great variety. I can confidently say that the chicken salad I had was the tastiest and best I’ve ever had in my life—simply divine! The outdoor bar area added to the charm, and the hospitable owner made us feel at home, even coming over for a lovely chat.
For those who enjoy outdoor activities, there’s river rafting and fishing available, as well as the chance to listen to the majestic calls of the fish eagles. One of the highlights of my stay was meeting the cutest dog, a fluffy and gorgeous companion named Willow. I spent the whole night cuddling with her, which added a personal and homely touch to the experience.
Finally, the sparkling pool was a great place to relax and cool off after a day of adventure. All in all, Khamkirri offers a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and hospitality. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a peaceful and...
Read moreOne of the best and relaxing holidays I've had!!!! From the minute we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Werner and we realised we were going to have to slow down and unwind. He briefed us about the camp and a few places and activities we could visit. The staff were really helpful and very friendly and knew how to serve the customer. The location of our log cabin was absolutely perfect. From our deck, we had a beautiful view of the Orange river and could hear the relaxing sounds of a rapid in the distance. The cabin was well equipped and the cleaning service was excellent and made our stay more comfortable and enjoyable. The scenery was spectacular and it was a relieve to walk in such a quiet and peaceful environment. The view of the sunsets from our deck was absolutely mesmerizing. Werner also accompanied us on a river rafting trip and we had a great time together. All respect for him who does a great job there. He is certainly an excellent ambassador for Khamkirri. The owner, Danie took us on a day trip to Riemvasmaak and his knowledge of the area and the history was very interesting and highly informative. All around excellent hospitality by Khamkirri. Indeed a very good place to relax and recharge the batteries. We will definitely be back... Hopefully in the not too distant future. Kind...
