Middelfontein Farm — Hotel in Karoo Hoogland Local Municipality

We stayed in the Saffron cottage which is situated in a lovely and peaceful part of Middelfontein Farm. The cottage has two rooms, one that includes the bed, dining room table, kitchen and a large fireplace and the other is the bathroom. Although there is no electricity, all the necessary amenities are provided. The farm entrance is less than a kilometre from Sutherland and less than 20 km's from the South African Large Telescope (SALT). With so little light pollution, the stars look spectacular once the sun disappears. There are also a number of walking trails. We tried the 6km trail and found it easy to negotiate and a lot of fun. Quite a bit of effort has been put into a plant identification booklet that names the various plants...

A fabulous little home under the perfect skies. The air is either cooled by a gentle breeze flowing thru the open window and door and is accompanied by soft birdsong, or softly warmed by a crackling fire that warms the very soul of this beautiful place.|Electricity is replaced with Soft oil lamp light or the gentle glow from a candle, while the blue flame on the gas heater boils your water|Basic, but exceptionally comfortable, with everything one needs... and the perfect host. Thank you Jaunita, for the warm welcome and excellent advise to do ALL the star gazing that is on offer, including the SALT tours, the planetarium and the" passion" that is imparted by Jurg..Our stay will forever be...

The farm is really beautifully located just outside of the town about 1km. The host Juanita is amazing and very helpful. She takes feedback well and actions them immediately. The accommodation has 2 fireplaces / braai places inside the house so you can keep the place warm including electric blankets which all came in handy as when we were there it was -3deg, yet the inside was warm and toasty. I would highly recommend this accommodation for family and friends. Pity we did not explore the farm as there was so much to see and do considering we only stayed 1 night due to lack of accommodation as Sutherland is fully booked this...
