I stayed at Sani Lodge Backpackers for 7 nights and had a wonderful experience! The staff were helpful and friendly, and the accommodations were clean and comfortable. Not to mention the beautiful surroundings! Sani Lodge is eco friendly, recycling and composting all waste and conserving water wherever possible. They have cows on site and provide fresh milk daily to guests as well as fresh butter and yogurt to guests buying breakfast. Dinners at the Lodge are delicious 3-course meals served in the dining room and fair trade wine is available as well. If the dining room isn't your thing there is also a fully equipped kitchen and herb garden for your enjoyment.
Another wonderful reason to stay at Sani Lodge are the owners, Russell and Simone. Aside from being an eco friendly location the owners also have other socially conscious programs in place. Such as volunteering at the local primary school Kwapitela. If a guest volunteers there for a week they receive free accommodation. As someone who volunteered there I would highly recommend it. The students are lovely and the need is enormous! Do a good deed while you travel! If daytime volunteering cuts into your hiking you can also give your time in the evening tutoring the children of the Sani Lodge staff. They are absolutely adorable and super eager to learn! Kids from both volunteer programs were excited to have us there and enjoyed playing games with us and singing and dancing for/with us at the end of class.
Please stay at Sani Lodge if you get the chance. They are such a wonderful organization. I really can't recommend them enough. And if you like tours Sani Lodge has a lot to offer. From multi-day hikes, pony tours, and forays into Lesotho, they have excellent guides who are knowledgeable and full of cultural insight. I wish I could have stayed there forever. My only minor complaint would be that the wifi was located in an...
Read moreHad such an amazing time here. The lodge is really cozy with wooden furnishings, fireplace, wool sweater vibes, and the friendliest people around. Staff is nothing but kind and helpful. There is a communal kitchen where complimentary milk is provided from their dairy cows along with tea, coffee, etc and a veranda with gorgeous views from the common space. There is also a braai space, pool, games, hiking trails directly from the lodge, and a café/restaurant/bar that accommodates vegetarians with delicious homemade-like meals. The breakfast is also great with homemade bread and jams to accompany the meal. The space overall is very green and homey. I’m someone who has trouble relaxing and I just felt so good while I was here! They also practice ethical tourism, engaging the locals and supporting communities who tourists benefit from through community funds and employment, etc rather than the extractive model that so many other places engage in. Their excursions are also wonderful. I had a super great time on the Sani Pass and Bushman’s hike outings. The staff is well knowledgeable about the KZN area, history, wildlife, etc and looks out for your well-being and is always in good humor. The only thing I struggled with was the shower which seemed to only come in boiling or freezing, but with such wonderful surroundings, it’s easy to take it in stride :) I even left my towel at the lodge by accident and when I came back the housekeeper had washed it and set it aside for me. Would...
Read moreGood day,
My self and 4 other gents stayed at Honeyguide cottage from 18-20 Aug 23. From the inception of our enquiries until we left , Jabu was my no. 1 Host , i almost stayed longer just to see her smile(fact). All staff pass you with a smile and a greet . We were made to feel like family,(even the gentlemen watering the plants is polite)
At no time did we feel we were away from home, the advice from Jabu on the hiking trails was informative, we did the Stromness hike which was about 14km punctuated by pure bliss and streams. Although there was load shedding as expected , we were briefed on what to expect and the gas stove inside the cottage was a bonus. The fire place was always stocked with fire wood and the complimentary unpasterurized milk was gladly received by all of us except one of the guys whose tummy started revolting for a a day and a half. I would recommend Sani Backpackers Lodge to anyone who wants affordable rustic living. If you are large group of more than 4 , i beleive Honeyguide is the best coattge , because it is secluded from other cottages and rondavels, the view is spectacular and you may have the privilecge of being visited by 2 cats and friendly jack russel.
Reception may be a problem but there is complimentary wifi at the cafe, The trails are all well kept, we did meet a berg adder on the trails , all you got to do is give them their space and not be alarmed.
enough of my bible story lol, Thank you Team(im actually referring to...
