This is a charming small guest house in Grahamstown. This historical building has some beautiful, and some odd, architectural features, including its beautiful wooden floors and high ceilings.||||Check in is seamless, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. There is convenient parking on the premises. The swimming pool is a lovely addition.||||Breakfast is divine, with two hot breakfast options, and a great cold breakfast and toast buffet available. There is no room service and there is no food available after breakfast, but there is a list of local restaurants who deliver in their room booklet.||||The WiFi isn't great. It's slow and the connection is unreliable. There was only one double point plug in the room which means only one lamp could work at a time, and charging one's electronics is something one needs to choose over a bedside lamp. The desk lamp was also broken. Lighting leaves something to be desired. The rooms are comfortable but there is a bit of an ant problem, so don't leave anything attractive to ants out (like old tea or coffee cups).||||The big windows are great and open wide for fresh air. The rooms can be a bit noisy, as the road is busy during the day and there are constantly people walking past and you can hear pretty much everything. The hotel says it provides ear plugs in the bedside drawers, but there weren't any in my room.||||The space was clean enough and I would consider staying here again, as it is a cosy hotel, and it is in a great location if you need to be in walking distance of most things in town, right by the university and not too close to any noisy bars. It's also within a five minutes walk from many restaurants, coffee shops and other amenities.||||As with any spaces in South Africa, be conscious of surroundings if walking anywhere. Grahamstown does have serious crime. Don't carry any obviously expensive things on you if walking, and don't leave valuables in a parked car. Don't walk alone at night or in dark, quiet spaces. Otherwise, it's reasonably safe to walk around during the day and there are some lovely things to see on a walk, including the closeby...
Read moreSituated just opposite the Drosty Arch in Grahamstown, the High Corner Guest House is an historical building, more recently known as the home of the late Guy Butler, who was a well known poet and academic who lived in Grahamstown. One of the theatres in the 1820 Settlers monument in Grahamstown is named after him. This is an old house, most likely one of the first in Grahamstown and it is characterized by very thick walls and large high ceilings. And the work done in converting the home into a guest house has been done with care. We stayed in the “Guy Butler” room, which was a cozy room towards the back of the house. The room has been fitted with Aircon/Heating and the addition of the bathroom was achieved by building walls with what are obviously old floor boards. Very considerate to use old materials in an old house. This is also an heritage building, which means that any alterations they do to it need to be approved by the heritage council. There was off street parking available, and when we arrived we were greeted by Elvis, who was a really warm and friendly fellow. During our stay here, he was our interface with the establishment and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was the usual buffet style, and the staff were accommodating with specific requirements. All in all this was a very pleasant stay. However, being an older house, of multi-storey construction and wooden floors, everything you are doing in the upper rooms is evident by the sounds being amplified by the floors. A very pleasant stay in this Eastern cape town during the National Arts Festival. But as recommended bu others, get a room to the rear of the building, street noise can be excessive at time, in this...
Read moreThe house is an antique. It's well maintained and the old school wood interior is in my view beautiful. It adds an ambience that is often missing in some establishments. ||Importantly this bnb is on High Street and is across the road from Rhodes University and a museum. Also just up the street is the High Court and numerous coffee shops, restaurants and retail outlets. ||When I got to my room i imagined it would be a standard room with ensuit bathroom and shower... mayhap a coffee station. Instead I was greeted with a furnished lounge, kitchenette, bathroom, two bedrooms and a rather naughty back door.||The kitchenette has a fridge, cupboards with full cutlery, microwave, two plate stove and a wash basin.||The main bedroom is spacious with cupboards, work desk and a queen size bed.||The other bedroom is similar but has two single beds instead of the Queen size bed in the main bedroom. ||The bathroom has your standard shower basin etc. ||What was different about this particular bnb is that it is surprisingly quiet. Which for me is a major plus. ||Unfortunately dinner is not served but if one literally walks across the road there are at least 3 or 4 good restaurants. Breakfast is served and includes tea coffee juice and continental breakfast and your choice of full English breakfast.||Free WiFi is available and a pool should one require a...
