We had a really lovely time here. We stayed two nights, the bed was big and comfy, the showers hot and the shared kitchen very well-equipped. The whole place was clean, colourful and homely. Vera is a great host who goes to a lot of effort to make sure her guests have all they need, including plenty of info on the amazing local hikes (so that you can do them independently), she also called around and organised any necessary transport for us.
I also love that Vera runs some cottage industries, like a jam making business that employs local people and treats them well, and her friendship circle is multicultural (I got some informal Zulu lessons at the kitchen table!). I wish more of our hosts along the way had been like Vera, I'd feel a bit more hopeful for the country's future if we'd met more like her (as opposed to later hosts who lamented the passing of apartheid (!), or proudly quoted the strength of their electrical fences). To finish on a more positive note - If you're missing your fur friends on the road, you'll find some great substitutes here (the...
Read moreWhat a great place!!!|We loved our stay, we wanted to stay one night, we ended up with three. We would have stayed longer but had to go back to JNB. |Vera and Lucio are super nice. Interesting people and fun. |The beds are comfortable and everything is very clean. |You can use the kitchen etc.|Also, Vera shown us the garden, and we were welcome to take some SUPER good vegetables. |Cat and dogs are lovely. ||We felt like home. We will come back!!||It is very easy to join the national park and the sentinel trail from their house. I would definitely recommend to stay there if you are up for these trails. They are gonna help you and give some advices.||The sentinel trail is not a easy hike. I mean it is not difficult by the “dénivelé” or the distance but because there is a gully, a difficult passage on the rocks and ladders (10m and 20m).|So if you are a beginner or afraid of the eight, take a guide. Go early, cause the weather turns in the afternoon.|I would definitely recommend Zee, she seems to be an amazing guide. She knows...
Read moreWe absolutely loved our time at Karma Backpackers!! The hosts were so lovely and truly made us feel at home. We had cozy blankets on our beds, including hot water bottles with knitted covers, which just added to the feeling of being home away from home. All of us staying at the hostel made a group dinner one night, which was really nice and added to the feeling of being at home. They also made sure that we were ready for our amphitheater hike the next day and knew the route and even set up our transportation from Witsieshoek Hotel for us. The veggies weren't in season, but they are so generous with everything they did have! The homemade jam was TO DIE FOR. We tried every single one in the short time we were there and even bought one to take with us. There was nothing better than having access to homemade jam and hot tea and coffee whenever we had the inkling. Truly an incredible stay, and I can't speak highly enough about it! A...
