Wepener is experiencing the results of incompetent municipality leadership as most small towns are in this part of South Africa. The entrance to the hotel is up a pot holed road and between some shabby shops, but we went in to see. When I got there, the receptionist was helping in the very full bar, with a crowd of mourners from a local funeral. I could not find anyone so was about to leave, when a very pleasant, lovely young man ran up to the car and apologized to me for not being able to find him. He took me to the room, helped me with the wheelchair for my husband, lit the fire in the room, ensured that the hot water was on, brought us a menu and some drinks. Absolutely the best service I have ever got anywhere, he is worth gold for that hotel. |But as for the hotel, the rooms are superb! Absolutely steeped in history, the beautiful furniture, spotless white sheets and comfy duvets on a huge very comfortable bed, complete with electric blankets, the beautiful fireplace, the huge spacious bathroom, everything clean and neat, with everything that you could ask for. |As we had a disabled person, he brought our supper to the room. He had recommended the steak (this is the Free State), and it was absolutely the best T bone steak that my husband has ever eaten! The chips were freshly cut, not frozen, the veggies were superb. Really, really a pleasant and wonderful surprise.|The gardens around the hotel are stunning, there are mountain bike trails from the hotel, definitely worth a...
Read moreLast minute booking after changing our route from Johannesburg to East London. Good halfway stop. The main B&B was full with a cycling group, but the owners were quite happy to accommodate us in a comfortable en suite room in the owner’s home which was a short walk from the b&b. Meals were served in the b&b with dinner being a great t-bone & vegetables & a malva pudding dessert. Would definitely stay there again if stopping in Wepener. The town is in a sad state, but that doesn’t detract...
Read moreThe Lord Frazer guesthouse run by Addie and owner Wilna, is a perfect gem of a hotel. Old style charm, great service, stunning rooms (ours had a beautiful fireplace) and lovely bar. This hotel unfortunately is a located in a town that is almost completely destroyed. Most of its historic buildings have been burnt to the ground and the place is littered in the worst trash imaginable. The Lord Fraser Guesthouse is a sanctuary in this town, and it would be the only reason to...
