Review of Oewerbos River Camp
I recently stayed at Oewerbos River Camp, and while the experience had its challenges, there were plenty of highlights that made it a memorable visit.
First off, the weather was extremely hot during my stay, reaching 45°C. However, the warmth of the welcome I received from Diana, the owner and manager, helped balance the heat. She went above and beyond to ensure that we felt comfortable and well taken care of, which was a wonderful touch.
The camp itself is home to a variety of animals, which added charm and character to the place. Three friendly dogs, ducks, a tame owl, cats, and a lovely aviary create a welcoming, homely atmosphere. The Orange River, which borders Namibia on the other side, provides stunning views, and I thoroughly enjoyed my morning swims in the river. For those preferring something cooler, there’s also a small pool available.
I stayed in a tent with air conditioning and an ensuite bathroom. While the tent was comfortable with a small fridge and sleeping arrangements for three, the shower left much to be desired. The water pressure was very low, and the temperature was either hot or cold with no in-between. Still, fresh towels were provided, and I appreciated that the staff offered to wash dishes on request.
For those who prefer other options, there are also small cabins and camping sites available. The deck area was a favorite spot for most guests, where people gathered to relax and enjoy drinks at the lively bar, which stayed buzzing late into the evening.
The camp’s location is convenient, especially for those planning to visit the border post nearby. There’s also a small shop down the road where you can pick up basic necessities. An exciting activity available at the camp is white water rafting, which can be arranged if you’re looking for an adventure.
Overall, Oewerbos River Camp is a cozy and friendly retreat with beautiful views, and Diana’s hospitality truly stood out. Despite a few minor setbacks, I would recommend it to anyone...
Read moreVisited for sundowners and very happy we rather stayed at Orange River Rafting Lodge up the road. The hostess (old woman with curly hair) was wretched, insulting and confrontational since we spoke on the intercom at the gate. She justified her bad behaviour she clearly was aware of by stating she's been drinking all day (drunkness is no excuse to be as rude as possible) and then writes it off by hissing that "You Cape Town people can't handle a joke, that's what's wrong with you, you're probably from Rondebosch or Wynberg". There was no call for her behaviour, she was on the attack since we showed up and clearly seeking a fight.
When we wanted to pay she hid in the kitchen knowing we want to pay and leave, making us wait since they don't have a card machine available. What should have been a pleasant sundowners was just an unpleasant experience and we left within the hour with a sour taste in our mouths.
I am glad we did not drive over half the country to have what should be a relaxing holiday, only to have it spoiled by a arrogant wretched drunk hostess constantly seeking a fight and blaming us for the...
Read moreWe have had such a wonderful camp at Oewerbos on the Orange river. The sites are large with plenty of shade and power points. Large clean communal ablutions with hot running water.
There are air-conditioned self catering chalets available which are recommended in summer as temperatures average in the mid 30's degrees Celsius.
They have the best Pizzas in the area available at the bar. There is a great shaded jungle gym, swimming pool and farm animals to entertain young children.
There is a fuzball and pool table at the bar and the team are very laid-back and accommodating.
They have dogs that roam freely in the campsite, but do not bother the campers and stand guard at your campsite.
One can book a rafting trip with one of the local guides take a day trip to the lookout point or visit the petroglyphs or the Cairns (Stacked rocks) 4x4 required.
