Montusi - A true gem of Drakensberg Mountains.
We recently had the pleasure of staying at the Montusi Mountain Lodge in Drakensberg, and I must say it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff's friendliness and genuine hospitality were evident. They truly go out of their way to make you feel at home, accommodating your every need with a smile and unparalleled efficiency.

The hiking trails are spectacular, with routes that cater to various skill levels, including a challenging hike up to Montusi Peak. Along the way, we were thrilled to encounter a rich diversity of fauna and flora, including numerous bird species and even sightings of mountain Eland and other wildlife.
For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, the lodge provides several other amenities. We enjoyed relaxing by the swimming pool, which offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The culinary experience was another highlight of our stay. The 5-star cuisine was simply exquisite, with great-tasting food and a rotating menu that ensured each meal was a new and delightful experience. The chefs were also accommodating of dietary preferences, ensuring a bespoke experience for every guest.

Read moreMy family stayed at Montusi for six absolutely perfect days and nights. My husband and I were desperate for a break from the pace of everyday life and couldn’t have asked for a more peaceful, relaxing and restorative haven in which to do it. And our two small kids loved being able to run free in the gorgeous gardens, swim in the pool and bathe in the winter dust! They especially loved the animals - Oscar the cat, AJ and Badger the dogs and all the horses. The view is out of this world, with a front row panorama overlooking the famous Amphitheatre from our beautifully appointed, subtly luxurious two-bedroom cottage. There are plenty of activities - we especially loved hiking to the Bushman’s Cave, the waterfalls and the summit of Montusi Peak, while riding with my daughter and sundowner picnics by the dam were real highlights. The food is faultless, for carnivores, vegetarians and kids alike with not a single repeated dish during our stay. The quality was something you’d expect from a top capital city restaurant, in the middle of paradise. And finally, the real stars of the Montusi show are the staff, from the owner Lindsay who went out of her way to treat us like friends rather than guests, to Pela the very experienced and entertaining riding guide, to the absolutely five-star restaurant ladies. Priscilla, Noxolo, Nqobile, Kwanele, Zanele - you’re all the loveliest, smiliest people who looked after us like royalty. We will treasure the memories made at your little piece of heaven and hope to be back one day...
Read moreThis place is an absolute gem that the international travel community should know about! Very easy transfer from Durban (or Johannesburg) to get here (in case you don’t drive on the left like me); the highways getting here are very safe and straightforward and full of rest areas and stops.
The entire staff at Montusi are excellent and really go out of their way to make your time and experience truly special at Montusi - from management to service staff. Truly amazing. Lindsay is an amazing manager.
The property itself is absolutely gorgeous, and I could spend all day just walking around it. You don’t have to go far to have a great hike. There is an easy quick trail right from the hotel entrance that leads to bushman cave paintings with a spectacular view.
I encourage the hotel to partner up with Wild Routes Africa for transfer services for internationals from Durban and Johannesburg, as that was an amazing and seamless experience with excellent customer service for us. There was another company Champagne Shuttle & Transfers that we were previously recommended that turned out to be an awful and terrible experience for us.
I would come back here in...
