Clean and decent accommodation just outside Northam. The rooms are comfortable with a view towards the central lawn with a swimming pool and beautifully maintained lawns. DSTV is somewhat poor, with only four channels available. The quality of the food is reasonable to good, but service tends to be slow when the restaurant is full. The restaurant is open from 6 in the mornings and 6 to 9 in the evenings. Arrive at 6 and order immediately if you'd like to eat quickly. Avoid the orange juice mixture for breakfast. Both Vodacom and MTN reception at the lodge are poor to non-existent, even for voice calls, implying that you have to buy wifi vouchers at R10 per 100Mb. Unfortunately the vouchers are only available in this size, so if you want 1GB you have to buy 10 vouchers, each with its...
Read moreI have been staying at Mawala lodge for over 10 years at regular intervals, for business reasons. It is conveniently located off one of the main roads ( no need to go on dirt roads). It is comfortable and clean and it is a part of a large game farm and I understand that game drives can be at arranged. There is also a landing strip on the property for light aircraft. The best thing though is the restaurant and bar - the food is good and well priced ( you can still get a 300 gram rump for less than R 120). It is also the only place for about 100 kms that has sushi! The quality of the meat is great. The accommodation is popular - it is essential to book...

The room was also very cold; I slept fully clothed. The air con unit was noisy and when that stopped the fridge would start up. The shower, though old and dated, was very good; powerful and wonderfully hot. Breakfast was okay. I guess this place is good for people working locally, but I wouldn't choose it as a holiday base. There is a charge for using wi-fi. Did get to see giraffes and zebra outside the lodge early morning, which...
