Having driven past Gabrielskloof a number of times, I just had to stop here when I finally got the chance. The estate is beautifully situated, on top of a hill with the vineyards growing around it, and the main building is designed in an Italian Villa style so you will have ample opportunities for great photos. Inside the main building they have the wine tasting center as well as a restaurant built around an open courtyard with trees and water features spread around a big lawn. We arrived just after the lunch-time rush and were lucky to get a table with a couch at the wine tasting center that overlooked the courtyard. As I had never tasted their wine before I was very excited, but when the person that did our tasting revealed to us that he was the owner, Bernhard Heyns, it made the experience just so much more special. They have a wide variety of wines to taste and every single one we tried we enjoyed. Bernhard and his teams' passion for wine truly shows in the wines as well as the tasting. With our tasting we also got a complimentary board with some olives, olive oil and bread, and also got to learn a bit more of the different olive cultivars. Courtyard gives me the feel of a South American drug lords compound with beautiful manicured lawns and gardens kept nicely tilled and cleaned. The real reason we visit regularly to stock up. “The Blend” what can I say. This red punches way above its weight class and comfortably goes 12 rounds against the heavy weights in the industry. But at half the price. Which is what I like. We this trip took a case of Syrah as well. Will give you feedback on that in time to come. But if the blend is anything to go by, I am sure we will not be disappointed. ………. To...
Read moreI don't write reviews but today is the day that I was highly dissapointed. We have been going to Gabriel's kloof for at least 15years. Always had wonderful food in a homely atmosphere. What they have done now is cold and bare. The scandi look is great in the right place ...this is not it. Their prices only cater for international market. We always enjoyed their cheese and meat platter ...today we ordered one( not on their menu ...2 seperate items) and although meat was great ...cheese was served on a plain plate 4 x1cm slices no garnish on plate with no preserves or relish. There was nothing spectacular about food and menu very small. R160 for a burger... I don't mind paying but then it must be good. This was my favourite place on any trip down the N2...will have to find...
