We booked via email and despite limited Spanish we managed to locate Los Colmenares (www.loscolmenares.com) and were happy to have free car parking very close by. Sadly our visit was just an overnight stay as we traveled through the beautiful Rioja region. There is much to experience in this locality and a longer stay is hoped for next time! ||This delightful traditional Casa Rurales has been transformed by the owners; Miguel and Carmen, our very grateful thanks to them for such a warm and friendly welcome. Our well appointed room was delightful and cool after a hot drive from Santander. Los Colmenares provided us with a haven and we particularly appreciated easy access to a refrigerator and freezer. There are comfortable, restful spaces with books, games and rest from the sun inside and also outside in the pretty courtyard garden. This quiet old casa is full of atmosphere and the loving restoration leaves a lasting impression. The food served also leaves a lasting impression, excellent cooking using fresh local ingredients and traditional recipes. Excellent value at 15 euros for a 3 course meal. The complimentary wine served encouraged us to seek out a tour/tasting at the local winery; Bodega Urbina (www.urbinavinos.com) The young proprietor Pedro gave us fascinating insights into the origins and development of the award winning Urbina wines produced by his family for generations. A 2 hour tour costs 5 euros per person. ||Cuzcurrita was very pleasant to explore. The brief stay provided rich memories assisted by a charming handmade souvenir from Carmen. No hesitation in recommending this very special and atmospheric place. Superb value and...
Read moreWe felt so lucky to have found the lovely Casa Rural Colmenares in La Rioja. Our hosts were very gracious and the family home, which they have renovated room by room, is a very special place. ||||For those of you who are English speaking only, Miguel and Carmen speak only a bit of English, however we all managed. Miguel speaks a bit of English and my daughter & I speak some Spanish. It was enough. At any rate, gracious hospitality and beauty transcend language. ||||We only had the breakfasts (they were lovely), and then off to visit a bodega, to walk in the country, to trek to a hermitage. The town and surrounding area are stunning, and worth at least a 2 day stay. Miguel and Carmen will have any number of suggestions to help you plan your time there. Be sure and ask about all the work they've done, in particular Miguel's ironwork... which is throughout the home and simply stunning.||||Mostly, though, the spirit and the welcome made this a truly memorable part of our visit to Northern...
Read moreThis place is amazing! We didn't have reservations and only an address of the B&B. We speak very little Spanish and depended on asking locals how to get there as our GPS could not find the location. A gentleman and his grandson in the streets lead our car to the Los Colmenares. Soooo nice and unexpected! Even though we could not communicate well with Carmen and Miguel, they could not have been nicer and more accommodating! Breakfast was wonderful and Carmen made a small wine cork plaque as gift which was sooo special! Could not find one thing wrong with this place. Miguel was very helpful with winery info. and Carmen was an excellent baker! I will never forget their hospitality and it would be a shame for any traveler to not stay there during their travels through La Rioja! Thank you so much...
