What a gem! A pretty chalet-type wooden building about a 1.5 km walk down a paved track from Markina-Xemein. Bar and restaurant as well as sleeping rooms with lots of outdoor tables and a big courtyard. The receptionist/barmaid spoke good English which was helpful. My room was on the 2nd floor (3rd for Americans) which is also the top floor. There is a lift which is helpful with heavy bags. The room had 2 mortared rock walls and a wooden cathedral ceiling. The bed headboard was painted with angels and the bed itself was very comfortable. There was a large skylight but no other windows. The bathroom was a somewhat strange configuration of an open sink area with glass doors leading to the toilet on one side and the shower on the other. The shower was a good size compared with some that I have had in Spanish hotels. The wifi didn’t work in the room but was stable and strong in the restaurant.||||The rooms were set around a central atrium open from the restaurant on the ground floor to the roof. The menu was fairly limited but with an excellent selection of very good pizzas. Who needs anything else? There was supposed to be breakfast left in the restaurant for those of us wanting to make an early departure and it was but unfortunately the door was locked so we couldn’t get into the room until a staff member turned up at 7.30am. In the end it was only a matter of a short delay and the pluses of the hotel far out weight that one small minus. ||||This hotel is an excellent choice if you are in the Markina area and very good for those of us walking the Camino de Santiago with it being on a good walking path out from the town and close enough to the Camino to still make an...
Read moreThe young lady who checked me in was great. I can tell she is aiming to do a good job. However, my interaction with the lady who checked me out, the molding shower, and the lack of laundry are the reasons I am giving it 1 star.
The shower needed to be cleaned better. There were mold spots. The hotel also listed on Booking.com that laundry was available, but when I inquired, I was told no laundry was available.
When I was ready to check out, I rang the bell and no one came so I had to go find someone which was annoying. Once I found the lady who would check me out after the bartender to me she was the boss, the lady sat at the table with her head down. Closing her eyes must have made her deaf, because when I approached the table and said "Excuse me" she acted like she couldn't hear me. In fact, she didn't acknowledge me and kept her eyes closed. When she opened her eyes, she didn't render any greeting or pleasantries, she just looked at me. I told her I was ready to check out. Instead of speaking to me directly, she turned to some random girl I never met in my life and asked her if I was with her. This whole interaction felt like I was back in the USA where people of color are treated poorly, but I never expected that in Spain. Even if this woman claims it wasn't about race, then it just makes her a 🐝itch for treating me that way. Either way. I would not stay at that...
