Hospedería Convento de la Parra — Hotel in La Parra

5 stars for the hotel, 5 star for the staff, 3 stars for the restaurant. If you appreciate "barefoot luxury", this is your place - or "sandal luxury", more to the point. This convent was respectfully renovated in the late 90s (owned at the time by the village, with management by a well known family in the culture/fashion/entertainment business and local ties) and its initial spirit has been maintained by the current owners (a local family owning 4 hotels in the region). |I spent a whole morning reading on one of the loungers around the cloister, with the sound of trickling water, the orange trees, the jasmine, the whitewashed walls, twittering birds. Basic furniture, just mattresses and throws, simple industrial lamps.|Then I moved on to the pool corner and dozed off after a tray of lunch. Attentive staff will bring you drinks and snacks anywhere in the building with a big smile (call reception).|The restaurant is not tops, but if you stick to basics you'll be well served. The free range eggs were great, the steak was not. |When you order think: village products, no perishables unless cheap to replace or they'll be frozen; no complex preparation required or they will be pre-prepared. The regional cheese and ham on offer are world-class, although locals will tell you there are even better options (but won't tell you where find them!).|The dreadful, terrible, boring decor in the bar/restaurant area gives you an indication of the damage that current management could inflict on the rest of the building if they decided to "update" the rooms. We tried to get into the Parador at Zafra but it was booked solid. So were all the other hotels in town. Then it started to rain buckets. When we found that there was one room left at the Convent in Parra, we set out (about 15 mins) for it. After driving through teensy back streets in Parra, we arrived at the understated address. But when the big doors swung open to reveal the charming anteroom and they welcomed us in, it was a sweet surprise. The central courtyard is surrounded by simple but elegant white-washed rooms where you can almost feel a sacred presence. Towels are huge and fluffy and are embroidered with Vive Despacio. The interior of our room had a smooth vaulted ceiling and walls and ceiling were white stucco that fairly glowed. Le lieu, extraordinaire, magnifiquement restauré, simplement, avec goût. La décoration est très réussie qui donne une nouvelle personnalité à ce lieu sans le dénaturer.||Pour le reste, c’est plus compliqué...||Pas pour la cuisine du restaurant, à l’évidence du congelé, même le pain ; c’est mangeable, sans plus, mais pas à ce prix-la, celui d’un restaurant cher de qualité.||Mais pour le service…||Le premier jour, une équipe, 2 personnes charmantes, l’accueil est très agréable, simple, efficace, généreux.||Le deuxième jour, une autre équipe, 2 personnes absolument désagréables, visiblement débordées, agacées, au contact sec…||- La serveuse au restaurant ne pouvant à l’évidence ne faire qu’une seule chose à la fois, il était donc impossible d’avoir en même temps, le plat, la boisson et le pain. Et au client qui ne s’en accomode pas lui est répondu « un momentito ». Quant à moi j’ai eu l’audace de demander un apéro (dont j’ai eu les olives et les chips après, évidemment…), ma commande n’a de fait été prise que bien après celles des autres tables, mais vraiment bien après (un momentito sûrement) accompagné de « ça y est, vous êtes prêt maintenant ?! »...||- La personne à la réception, sérieuse, très sérieuse, qui tape et retape à plusieurs reprises la note des consommations des 2 jours, s’agaçant sur sa calculette qui ne devait pas bien fonctionner. Et puis de prendre l’Amex, et finalement de ne pas la prendre et de la poser devant elle ne voyant pas la main que je lui tendais ; et ensuite d’attendre, elle bras tendu toujours sans me regarder, la CB que j’ai dû mettre quelques secondes de trop à sortir de mon portefeuille. Bien sûr sans un sourire, ni merci, bon voyage ou tous ces petits mots encombrants et inutiles n’est ce pas ?... Ouf, c'est terminé.||S’il n’y avait eu que ce jour-la, définitivement je ne recommanderais à personne cet hôtel. Ca doit être le cas des personnes dont les commentaires parlent de ce problème, PROBLEME MAJEUR que les responsables devraient penser à résoudre.
