My wife and I and another couple stayed three nights at Mas Pere Pau during a month-long trip to Lanquedoc and Catalonia. It was an excellent choice. An ancient stone farmhouse recently converted into a stylish and modern boutique hotel and restaurant, Mas Pere Pau is located in a quiet area of countryside about 2 or 3 kilometers from the delightful old city of Besalú. Our room was large, spotlessly clean and quiet. The bed was comfortable with reading lights on each side of the bed. The bathroom was modern and efficient with good water pressure in the shower and plenty of hot water. (The only drawback was the all-too-common open shower that leaves water all over the floor.) Our room had a small terrace that we did not use because it was beastly hot outside. Inside, however, the air conditioning worked very well to keep the room cool. The owners and staff at the hotel – in particular Txell and Jamilla – were exceptionally friendly, welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was simple but adequate with a variety of local cheeses and meats. The restaurant was not yet open because we were off season but we got a glimpse of it and it was gorgeous. I’d happily return here if ever again...
Read moreWe spent two nights at Mas Pere Pau, which was a lovely experience. Beautiful renovation of farm buildings down narrow lanes looking out onto mountains and fields. Pool looked beautiful but we didn’t try it as it was a little chilly!||The room was gorgeous, spacious with views over the grounds and shutters and mosquito panels at the windows. The en-suite was clean and modern, with frosted glass wall, which despite other comments provided full privacy. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room but downstairs there was plenty of teabags and coffee pods to use. ||Staff were friendly and made great recommendations for local sights and restaurants. Only drawback is that the restaurant is not open for dinner ever day and we stayed on two nights when it was closed, so missed out on that experience. Be aware of the fact that local restaurants often don’t open earlier on in the week. ||We would definitely stay again, a real...
Read moreSomeone has clearly spent a lot of money on this place but the results are mixed. Our room was stunning to look at but the glass-enclosed toilet was solely for exhibitionists! And the pillows were the hardest we've ever experienced - we had to use the cushions instead. The breakfast room echoed uncomfortably and the breakfast itself was pretty average - no bread, just toast and only dried fruit available in prime strawberry season to accompany nasty packet cereals. Because the restaurant was closed, we had pre-ordered a meal which was served in our room. But it was cold even when it arrived, with no means to maintain any heat that might have been in it. And veal turned out to be just a plate of veal with not so much as a single potato or a bean. It was really disappointing. The strangest thing was that the staff all left in the evening and came back in the...
