We recently returned from a three-night stay at El Sarmiento, and if we could have stayed longer, we absolutely would have! Having recently sold our property on the playa— (due to our business making lengthy visits difficult), I set out to find a boutique hotel that could become our go-to place when we visit Mojácar a few times a year. From the moment we arrived and were warmly welcomed by Carsten and Yvonne, I knew we had found it.
The setting is breathtaking, offering an idyllic escape in the countryside of Mojácar. The hospitality was exceptional—Carsten, despite being unwell, still greeted us with a smile, and Yvonne was the perfect host. Even though we know Mojácar well, she shared great recommendations that we hadn’t considered before, showing just how knowledgeable she is about the area.
Breakfasts were a real highlight—fresh, varied, and absolutely delicious! The scrambled eggs and bacon were superb, and the coffee was just what we needed to start the day. On the evening we arrived, we enjoyed a wonderful meat platter paired with a great bottle of wine—just what we needed after our journey, and absolutely perfect.
We stayed in a Garden Room, which was tucked away from the main house and had a lovely, peaceful outlook. The room was spotlessly clean, the bed super comfortable, and the sheets were perfect (and I’m very particular about this!). We requested extra pillows, and they were brought to us within minutes—such great attention to detail.
We visited in February, out of season - this place is truly worth visiting at this time of year. The peaceful atmosphere, the fresh springlike mornings, and the chance to enjoy a really good coffee in the most beautiful surroundings made it feel even more special.
El Sarmiento is everything we were looking for—peaceful, personal, and luxurious without being pretentious. We will definitely be returning (hopefully later this year!), and we can’t wait!

Read moreAn veritable oasis in the desert!!! Highly recommended for any couple that needs a relaxing but comfortable break. Recently stayed for 3 nights in this lovely Cortijo. It is in a very quiet location a couple of miles outside Mojacar pueblo and about 10 mins from Mojacar playa. The Cortijo has stunning views from it's terrace and pool area over the valley and mountains beyond The whole site has been beautifully and tastefully upgraded. The mini orchard and grounds sprinkled with various Cacti, Orange and Lemon trees and other plants. Every detail is simply beautiful! Wonderful breakfasts served between 9 and 10.30 on the terrace with the beautiful views. Snacks and tea/coffee/drinks available during the day in the "honesty bar". Finally and definitely not least, Karsten and Yvonne were thoughtful and wonderful hosts. Really put effort into making sure you were comfortable and got the most out of your stay, without being intrusive. Full of advice about local beaches, towns and sites of interest. Good recommendations on local restaurants to eat at. Between them they cover a minimum of English/German/Flemish/French/Spanish apparently fluently. Also willing to smile and kind enough to tolerate my very rusty/terrible German longer than most! 😉 Honestly just can't recommend this place highly enough!! We hope to go back in the not too distant...

Breakfast was nice. The owners are very helpful- and I am sure, in high season, all the amenities are available. For us- our spa, relaxation break, was nothing more than an opportunity to read a book. None of the massages, yoga classes, tasting menus, wine tasting experiences shown on the website were available . These only happen in high season apparently. Sauna turned on for an hour after we requested. Then turned off. We were offered ham and cheese cold plate for evening meal(€35) and no lunch option. We had to organise a taxi to take us to a local restaurant for lunch. And every extra ( even tea/ coffee ) was an additional charge. At the price charged I had hoped for, at least, lovely toiletries -but no. Only body wash in the showers. Sheets scratchy and a tiny , single duvet on their king size beds. Lovely place / but not what the website depicts. Just simply not worth the very expensive price tag. It all just felt very mean. This was a present for Christmas from our partners. A chance to experience spa relaxation. Our partners were totally embarrassed by what was the reality. Perhaps do not open off season. Or do not charge high...
