I recently stayed here for four nights as part of a longer trip during which we stayed at several luxury brand name hotels (Four Seasons, Aman, Belmond). This was the best hotel that we stayed at out of all of them while also being the most reasonably priced. The hotel is breathtakingly beautiful and has wonderful views, but by far the most outstanding part of our stay was the service.
On our first morning at the hotel, I was greeted in the lobby by a man who told me that unfortunately my car had a flat tire. Not only had they noticed this several hours before I woke up, but they had already called the rental car company and had them patch the hole / refill the tire. Instead of our first day in Mallorca being ruined by hours of delay, we were blown away by Son Net's service. Whenever I needed my car (which you will to get anywhere, as Son Net is up quite a long private driveway) they had it pulled around in seconds and always with fresh bottles of water for us in the cup holders. It was unbelievable.
Breakfast here was the best of anywhere on our trip and the view from the terrace is beautiful. We didn't get a chance to have dinner here, but the hotel bar was lively until roughly 1am and a lot of fun.
The rooms were beautifully decorated. At first I thought the furnishings must have been incredibly old because of the detail and craftsmanship, but then I noticed new touches such as USB-C connections on the nightstands and modern bathroom fixtures. Really incredible, but I will mention that ours was quite small.
There's a lot of hype about towns like Deia and Soller but the town of Puigpunyent I found much more authentic and charming. There are locals having wine and dinner outside in the town center until late in the evening, which I didn't really see anywhere else in the big tourist towns.
I thought I'd find the dress code a silly and stuffy but everyone just looked nice and it wasn't a big deal to not wear shorts after 8pm. I went to breakfast most morning in a t-shirt and shorts and nobody looked at me funny.
The concierge staff had excellent recommendations on which calas/beaches to visit (and which to avoid). They saved us lots of time and energy.
Very small nitpicks:
We booked via Amex so should've been eligible for a free upgrade. They told us that there was an upgrade available but unfortunately it was THREE levels higher than our booked room and this program apparently only covers TWO upgrade levels. This seems kind of arbitrary and when I offered to pay for a 1-level upgrade they said that this wouldn't be possible and I'd have to pay the full sticker price of a triple upgrade. Our room was beautiful, but sure would've been nice to have a slightly large one if it was vacant anyways.
The weather was ok so this wasn't much of a problem but the AC unit in our room was clearly for placebo effect only. I had it set to 7 degrees for the entire length of our stay but didn't feel any cool air coming from the vents and slept on top of the covers each night.
We were the youngest people here by maybe ~15-20 years but that of course isn't the fault...
Read moreSon Net is absolutely gorgeous! It's about a 30 minute drive from the airport in Palma, so not too far. It's at the top of a pretty tall hill above a small town called Puigpunyent so you can walk down and walk around town, get a sense of the culture, and eat at some great little restaurants. It's only about a 10 minute walk down, but the walk back up can feel like quite a trek because of the hill. But once you're at the top of the hill, the walk is definitely worth it because of the fantastic panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and villas. The grounds themselves are immaculate, and you feel like you're in the middle of nature while still being surrounded by luxury. There are lots of paths to walk or hike so if you want to get out into all of that nature, you can. The inside of the hotel is amazing. There has clearly been an effort to combine modern day comforts and conveniences with the authentic historical feel of the hotel (the land was once given by the king of Mallorca to a group of pirates as thanks for their aid in helping to defend the island from Invaders!), and that effort has been successful. The rooms themselves are spectacular, and they offer amazing views of the surrounding countryside, as well. They're exquisitely decorated with gorgeous furniture, insanely nice bathrooms, and incredibly comfortable beds. The restaurant serves amazing food, and they also have a treehouse that you can reserve. When you done in the treehouse, you order off of a special menu and you eat in a cute little actual treehouse (seriously, it's in a tree), which offers an even better vantage point of all the land around you. It's a truly magical experience to eat there as the sun goes down (or as it comes up; they also serve breakfast there). I also have to mention that the buffet-style breakfast is superb. If you aren't feeling up to eating at the restaurant, they also have excellent room service. The food is delicious, even if the menu is a little more limited than the restaurant itself. There are a few other things that have to be mentioned. The hotel has a fabulous spa where you can schedule massages, mani/pedis, body treatments, and facial treatments. You have to schedule in advance because there is only one therapist there and it can book up quickly, but it's definitely worth the effort. There is also a small gym with some treadmills, an elliptical, stationary bike, and free weights. It's small, but clean, and let's be honest, you don't go on vacation to spend your day at the gym. There's a beautiful pool with poolside service (food and drinks) as well as cabanas that you can rent. There's a Jacuzzi and another, smaller pool down below the main pool, also with a row of cabanas. Finally, there's the staff. They're all amazing, and are always eager to help solve any problems and offer advice on how to choose between the dozens of different activities that are available to choose from. I love Son Net. This was my second time staying here (both times in early-mid August), and I hope to return...
Read moreHaving previously stayed (and loved) their sister hotel, Finca Cortesin, we were excited to stay at Grand Hotel Son Net. While the hotel is nice, there were a number of things that left a bad taste in our mouth. ||The good bits:||- The hotel and the grounds are stunning. Especially the pool.|- The breakfast is delicious and service excellent||The bad bits:||- On booking our room (which cost €1500 per night) we were told there’s normally a €95/night surcharge for bringing our 9 month old son but that we would not be charged on this occasion as it’s our first stay. It’s ridiculous that they would consider charging anything to bring a baby. We have never stayed anywhere that levies such a high surcharge for a baby. |- Before we arrived we requested a bottle steriliser for our baby; something that has been free in every other hotel we’ve stayed in. They emailed back saying it would cost €32 to “rent” one for 3 days.|- On arrival, we didn’t even know if we’d come to the right place as there was no one around to greet us (despite security having alerted reception to our arrival when we drove in). We had to go inside and ask at reception to get help. It didn’t feel a very welcoming environment for a 5* hotel. |- We asked for a bowl of puréed vegetable to be brought to our room to feed our son which they charged us €26 for. We didn’t expect to be charged the price of an adult main course for something so simple. We have stayed in multiple 5* hotels with our baby and things like this have always been provided complimentary |- The lunch restaurant doesn’t start service until 1pm and the earliest booking for the dinner restaurant is 7.30pm, both of which are too late if you have young children. We opted for room service but unfortunately the menu is limited and the only options for a main meal are either a salad or burger. |- You have to lock yourself into the room with a large metal key, otherwise the door just pushes open. While we appreciate this is an older property and they’re trying to keep the original features, it also didn’t feel safe. |- At the pool we asked for a water which was brought in a small bottle and we were then charged €7 for this. Again, I would not expect to be charged for water at a 5* hotel. It’s especially odd considering the same water is free in our room. ||While the the hotel did their best to accommodate us, ultimately we didn’t feel itit was setup for parents with babies. We felt they were prioritising making a profit from our child rather than trying to make life as easy as possible for the parents. ||We would not recommend coming here...
