Finca Arminda — Hotel in Villa de Mazo

If you are driving to Finca (Dona) Arminda you need good instructions – the house is set back from the road and there is no sign with its name on. It is set high up on the steep hillside overlooking the SE coast of La Palma. There are excellent views out over the sea and the landscape – which is made up of scattered agricultural plots, small banana plantations and vineyards, and scattered housing. It is directly above the airport but noise isn’t a problem. You can distantly hear the aircraft engines winding up and down for take-off and landing but not once they are in flight (and there aren’t that many flights). The house is an attractive traditional-style building with a central, open courtyard surrounded by an enclosed corridor – off which all the rooms and staircases radiate. It is elaborately furnished in traditional ornate style with lots of catholic artefacts/pictures. It is 3 stories at the back (facing the sea) and one at the front. Rooms are furnished in a similar style and are well equipped (including large electric kettle, electric radiator, hair dryer and a very good fan heater). WiFi is available in a common lounge area but nowhere else. All the windows have wooden shutters which provide blackout conditions when closed. The plumbing is a bit antiquated and quirky but usually supplies very hot water. Our room was on the ground floor at the back with doors opening onto one of the many small gardens that surround the building – terminating in a balustrade overlooking the landscape below. Outside table and chairs and sun loungers are provided. I think all the rooms have access to an outside ‘lounging ’area.||On the first night a 2l bottle of water, various hot drink options, some cakes and a full fruit bowl are provided. ||Breakfast is served outside on the terrace overlooking the swimming pool area and is a veritable feast. It starts off with a freshly-made smoothie accompanied by some nuts. This is followed by a huge platter with omelette, sliced tomatoes, sliced cold meats and cheeses and a huge selection of sliced fresh fruit. All accompanied by coffee and bread and jam. To finish there are some ‘cakes’ and or petit-fours type things. We never had room for these and together with an item of fruit from the bowl in our room they made up our lunch.||Carmen, the owner of Finca Arminda is extraordinarily pleasant and couldn’t be more helpful. English isn’t her best language which makes her efforts to help all the more impressive.||The only caveats about Finca Arminda relate to meals. In February, breakfast is normally served at 0900 (when the sun is – hopefully – full on the terrace). Carmen is quite willing to make exceptions to this for special circumstances e.g. getting an early flight home or an early ‘slot’ at Cumbrecita, but 0900 is the norm. This means you can’t get started until about 0940 which can take a chunk out of your day if you have something ambitious planned. And, in the evening, there isn’t a restaurant that you can walk to – so you have to drive. If you want to eat before 1900 this involves driving to Los Canjeros. From 0700 you can go to the excellent fish restaurant Casa Goyo near the airport and from 0730 you can go to the nearest one of all, Casa Pancho, 3 km further down the road that Finca Arminda is situated on. Not really a hotel - no reception, no bar, no restaurant - more an upmarket B&B. There's no identification of the place from the road, so you have to know exactly where you're going to find it. Once there you're sharing the home of a lady who speaks no English and her daughter who speaks some. The furniture is from the 1920's (or maybe even earlier), but there was fruit and a bottle of wine in our room, the beds were comfortable, the water was always hot, the view great and the breakfasts.......||They're served on the terrace (even in February!). Fruit juice or home-made smoothie. Rolls, butter, honey, jam. A large plate of fruit, meats, cheeses, pieces of Spanish omelette, all beautifully presented, normally followed by a smaller plate of local cakes and sweetmeats. Plenty of coffee and tea. One of us is lactose intolerant - we warned the hotel in advance - and they went out of their way to accommodate us (soya milk, various lactose-free cheeses etc). After all this you really only need a small lunch!||There's a small (unheated pool) and a banana plantation surrounding the hotel grounds.||Provided the hotel isn't full, Dona Arminda is happy for you to stay in your room until it's time to leave.||If you stay here you need a car. Hotel Finca Arminda ist ein wunderbares Boutique Hotel, oder eher schon eine Bed & Breakfast Pension mit einem wirklich bemerkenswert persönlichen Service.||||Zur charmant individuellen Einrichtung der Zimmer ist in anderen Reviews schon viel geschrieben worden, daher ein paar Punkte, die wissenswert und besonders hervorhebenswert sind. ||||Lage: ||Finca Arminda liegt nahe der Hauptstadt Santa Cruz auf der Ostseite der Insel. Das absolute Gros der Unterkünfte liegt auf der sonnigeren Westseite, die man durch einen Tunnel innerhalb von 20 Minuten erreicht. Die Ostseite ist wolkiger, etwas kühler und windiger, dafür aber auch weit weniger touristisch und authentischer (auch wenn La Palma insgesamt noch ziemlich unverdorben ist). Wir waren im März dort. Für ausgiebiges Sonnenbaden auf der schönen Terrasse wäre es um diese Zeit noch zu frisch.||||Wir sind nach der Ankunft eine ganze Weile mit dem Mietwagen umeinander gekurvt, bevor wir die Finca gefunden haben. Die Lage auf Google Maps ist ungenau bzw. stimmt nicht und unsere Gastgeberin Carmen liegt mit den örtlichen Behörden im Clinch, die ihr bis jetzt nicht erlaubt haben (Denkmalschutz?), die Finca mit einem entsprechenden Schild von der Straße erkennbar auszuzeichnen. ||Wenn man es weiß, ist sie eigentlich sehr einfach zu finden. Sie liegt an Kilometer 8,7 der Küstenstraße LP-2, die den Süden der Insel umrundet. Trotzdem liegt sie absolut ruhig – die Straße ist nicht sehr stark befahren und die Finca liegt ohnehin einige Meter zurückgesetzt. Ich habe ein paar Photos mit der Perspektive von der Straße aus hochgeladen, so dass man sie schnell erkennen sollte.||Vom Flughafen braucht man eigentlich kaum mehr als 5 Minuten zur Finca. Trotzdem kann von Fluglärm keine Rede sein, was einerseits daran liegt, dass der Flughafen mehrere 100 Höhenmeter unterhalb liegt, zum anderen am sehr moderaten Flugverkehr. Viel mehr als 10 – 15 Flieger pro Tag kommen nicht, und die meisten davon sind kleine Turboprops, die La Palma mit Teneriffa oder Gran Canaria verbinden. ||||Frühstück & Service: ||Es ist schon mehrfach beschrieben worden, aber man kann es nicht genug betonen. Die Art und Weise, wie sich Carmen mit ihren Helferinnen um die Gäste kümmert, ist außergewöhnlich. Das zeigt sich besonders beim Frühstück, wo jeden Tag eine etwas andere Kombination aus Früchten, Käse & Wurst, frische Brötchen, ein Smoothie, etc kredenzt wird. Man könnte es jeden Tag wieder photographieren, es wäre immer leicht anders, aber immer ein Augen- und Gaumenschmaus. Für uns war es eher zu viel, aber zu schade, um es übrig zu lassen. Wir schmierten uns die restlichen Brötchen als Wanderproviant für den Tag. ||Carmen behandelt ihre Gäste wie Freunde, mit einer Leidenschaft für Perfektion und einer Herzlichkeit wie man sie nur selten findet. Mit ihrem erfrischenden Mix aus Spanisch und Englisch ist sie auch um keinen guten Tip verlegen. ||||Internet: ||Noch ein letztes Wort dazu, weil es in den Zimmern kein funktionierendes WLAN gibt. Das macht inzwischen allerdings überhaupt nichts mehr, weil das Mobilnetz auf La Palma fast überall gut bis sehr gut ist und seit dem Wegfall der Roaming-Gebühren auch in Spanien bzw. auf den Kanaren die deutschen Inlandsgebühren gelten. Wir haben daher über unsere Smartphones einen Hot Spot angelegt, mit dem wir die Tablets bzw. Computer verbunden haben und somit die Digital Ausgabe der Süddeutschen Zeitung trotzdem lesen konnten. Für diejenigen, die das bisher noch nicht gemacht haben sollten: Geht kinderleicht. ||||Resümee: Es gibt wärmere und wohl auch sonnigere Ecken auf La Palma, aber kaum liebenswertere und authentischere.
