Mahi surf hiriketiya — Hotel in Sri Lanka

After reading the reviews my partner and I, with 1 year old in tow booked a 4 night stay at Mahi Surf. We checked in late at night on the first day and were unfortunately very disappointed. There had been guests the night before and the property had clearly not been cleaned properly since they left. Not only that but the general hygiene of the place was very poor with food left on chopping boards, open bags of previous guests food left on kitchen counter, mould all over the fridge, filthy dish clothes, and in general a poorly maintained kitchen area. Only one of the rooms AC worked; the other just blew out hot air. The stand up fan produced little to no wind at full power. It was clearly indicative of property that was very tired and poorly maintained. Another significant issue, although understandably out of Suranga’s control, but the neighbours dogs barked incessantly during all hours of the night and it was very difficult to sleep for more than a few hours without being woken up as the bedrooms back onto where the dogs are.

The location is however fantastic as it’s a 5 min walk to the beach and the front garden area is very nice but also in need of some TLC.

Unfortunately we were so disappointed with the property that we checked out first thing the next morning. When we told Suranga about our concerns regarding the cleanliness of the property, he just blamed the previous guests. When we remarked that the grime in the fridge and the condition of the dish clothes were months, if not years, of build up he didn’t really say anything. In fact mid way through explaining the situation to him he ran out to message some guests who had just enquired about staying there that night. He was not apologetic in any capacity, took the one night rate in full, and was immediately looking for the next guests. His time would be better spent investing in property improvements. Whilst we knew the property would be basic we did not think it would be dirty. We were left perplexed as to why the property had been rated so highly from other reviewers as the cleanliness and lack of maintenance has clearly been an issue...

We just happened upon this place looking for a last minute accommodation for the night. It was a wonderful surprise! we loved staying here & wish we could have stayed a lot longer but he was booked up the following nights. It was a perfect location to the beach. We staying in the upstairs apartment, it felt like a tree house. Super clean, comfortable, a lot of extra space & I love that the bathroom was opened up half way making it feel like an outdoor shower. Wish we could have stayed longer but 10/10 would recommend.
