You don't choose the Swiss canton of Graubünden to leave your money in the well-known, sophisticated and extravagant ski resorts of Davos or St Moritz D. No. Graubünden still has them, the small mountain villages with rustic and authentic architecture, in a quiet location and perfectly connected to the unique network of the Rhaetian Railway. Such a place is Bergün below the Albula Pass, just under an hour by train from the capital Chur. And best of all: it has a hotel within 3 minutes walking distance from the train station, which is not very big, but is all the more perfect for it. Don't worry, you won't hear any noise in the room, the house is in new, renovated condition. Only the lift is missing, but the friendly hostel father will help you to lug your suitcase. We lived in a large apartment room for three. Superbly equipped, beds to sleep through, cozy, very clean. Bathroom spacious and modern. TV reception without problems. Wifi not always stable. The small restaurant offers the best Swiss cuisine, freshly prepared. Yes, as a foreigner you are always amazed at the prices, but it has a moderate price level for local conditions. The balcony view of the nearby peaks over the small mountain village is unique and offers the morning sunrise view with sunlit 3000m peaks. A dream! Friendly staff, helpful in every way. Read moreI spent one night at Hotel Ladina and have mixed impressions. The location is lovely and my room had a balcony with mountain views. However, the basics were lacking: a single tiny blanket, huge pillows that made sleep impossible (leading to us cutting our trip short), and awkwardly placed outlets. The bathroom mirror door wouldn’t stay open, and a bright streetlight shone directly into the room all night through the balcony doors—right beside the bed.||My friend’s room was significantly smaller, cold, and faced the train station. It lacked even a coat hook, yet we both paid CHF 120—hard to justify.||The balcony furniture consisted of uncomfortable garden chairs, and the escape-room-style key code and switch system was neither secure nor guest-friendly. Doors were often left open, making it feel more like a hostel. To top it off, housekeeping started vacuuming at 8 a.m. next door—the first (grumpy) staff contact we had.||Breakfast was okay but uninspired. No regional cheese or meats (which Parc Ela is famous for), and with hours from 8-10am providing limited flexibility for early hikers.||Bottom line: Great setting, but the stay lacked comfort, care, and cohesion. It felt like cost-cutting took priority over...
Read moreStaff were very nice! Good location, quiet. Room was cramped but clean, with wooden floors, good heating, good shower pressure, large sink. Bed a bit too soft to be comfortable for me, but others may like it.
My main hesitation is that I saw quite a few houseflies flying around inside the restaurant and landing on the buffet food during breakfast, eg. the bread, which was not covered. I don’t know if the buffet is considered extensive, but it had bread, cold cuts, fruit, yogurt, milk. Didn’t see muesli nor eggs.
Other restaurants in Bergün also had some indoor houseflies, but fewer. I guess it’s considered normal there, but it would be more hygienic to use a food protector if possible.
Also, after I returned to the room one day, I noticed that housekeeping had been there (which was nice of them) but had apparently also let in a housefly, which was sitting on the bed. I couldn’t get it to fly out despite some trying, and eventually had to kill it :|
Restaurant did not have many vegetarian options, and also had a smaller seasonal menu than other places, so due to that and the flies I ended up always eating elsewhere...
