The Hotel Glacier du Rhône in Gletsch is a old historic Hotel, open seasonally in summer from late June to late September at the crossroads of the Grimsel and Furka summit roads and dates back to the mid 1800 when travelers by foot or horse carriage needed a place to rest and recover.||Today it offers the modern traveler still a cozy place to rest and recover from a day hiking or biking out in the fantastic and picturesque mountains and glaciers of this rural area.||The Hotel is still in its very traditional style with classic furniture but offers the basics of today’s minimal needs (toilets, showers, electricity, heating) mobile phone reception is available, but don’t expect WiFi or TV, but read some of the books and magazines available in the study’s library or relax by the wood fireplace. Some of the rooms have their own private bathroom, others have shared facilities. Gletsch has the wonderful distinction of being located at the base of 2 of Switzerland's major mountain passes, that are open only during the sommer months. We had just descended from the Furka Pass and before going up on the Grimsel Pass, we stopped in this small village at the Hotel Glacier du Rhone for a lunch bite. Obviously a lot of other people had the same idea on this sunny Sunday in mid-June, thus the parking lot was quite full but we managed to garner a spot for our car. The food was served buffet style, which was definitely the most effective way to handle the number of people present. Two of us helped ourselves from the enormous and well-stocked salad buffet, with a major on sausage and cheese salad and the other two had the Wienerschnitzel and the Veal Bratwurst. We all were quite happy with our choices and the quality of the food - though found that the prices were quite high, which was to be expected at this seasonal mountain location...
