Hotel Le Petit Relais — Hotel in Saanen

I should start by clarifying that my five-star rating does not imply that this is a five-star hotel with five-star facilities. It's not. My five-star rating represents that fact that this is a very good two-star hotel.||The hotel is a new chalet style hotel with very modern decor inside. It is a small family-run hotel and this is one of the reasons why it scores highly. The service was very good and very friendly.||I called the hotel in advance to ask about the menu for the nights we were staying as the hotel only offers a single choice of meal (but at a very reasonable price) so that we could book a restaurant if the meal was not suitable. The staff did not know what the meal would be but called me back later in the week when the menu was finalised. Also, when we called to say that we would arrive later than the specified check-in time we were told this was no problem and someone was there to check us in later in the evening. When we asked if there were any restaurants still open we were told this would be unlikely but we were offered a simple meal in the hotel even though the restaurant was closed. ||As mentioned, the hotel was very modern inside and the rooms were spotlessly clean and the beds were comfortable. Our room was quite small, but there were larger rooms in the hotel also.||The location of the hotel is great. It's only a few minutes walk from the train station and even closer to the ski lift. You can ski right back to the terrace if you turn off the lower piste a few hundred meters from the bottom.||Finally, the breakfast was simple (bread, meat, cheese etc) and self service, but the all the produce was fresh and the bread and coffee were really good. I stayed here for a few days break last month. It's clearly very new, and is run by a charming family that is really welcoming and cheerful. Le Petit Relais is about five to ten minutes walk away from the railway station, up a little bit of a slope. It's very quiet - no traffic or train noise - spotlessly clean, and has a wonderfully powerful and reliable wi-fi signal. The owner prepares dinner (provided you confirm before 12 noon that you will be dining that evening) from delicious, local fresh produce, and breakfast is good, too.||||I was recovering from a broken bone in my foot when I arrived, and without needing to ask I was immediately offered a room on the ground floor near the dining area, with a little terrace where I could sit and read. ||||The room furnishings are simple (plain white, open clothes cupboard), but more than adequate, and the bed gave me a good, comfortable sleep. My only, tiny problem came when I tried to sit and read/work on my laptop in bed. The wall behind it is decorated with a panel in the shape of the local mountains. Unfortunately, it stands away from the bed, and was at exactly the place where I would have rested my head. It made it almost impossible to find a comfortable sitting position, and alas, the lights are behind it, which means the only light they provide shines directly onto your shoulders. We stayed here last weekend for a short ski trip - it was a good choice for us, and I think the price fairly reflects the quality (new, comfortable) and the location (close to a lift for the main Gstaad ski are) - with the friendly hosts being a bonus. ||||The room we got (a double 'grand lit' for around CHF 180 per night) wasn't massive but it is all nice and new and well set out. The Gstaad area isn't cheap though, so the price seemed fair compared to our other options, and the location is good for arriving by train or car from Zurich / Bern direction. ||||The best part, however, was the friendliness of the owners, and their concern for how we enjoyed our stay. If only every Swiss business was this friendly and helpful...||||We liked it. We will be back. Hopefully next time we will get to have dinner, which seems like a great deal at CHF 28 per person...
