At first glance, Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge gives the impression of a luxurious, high-end five-star resort. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the rooms are located in wooden lodges scattered across a lush garden. Especially the front-row rooms offer a breathtaking, panoramic view over a vast valley from spacious balconies. The rooms are tastefully decorated, with a luxurious feel, and the infinity pool adds to the idyllic atmosphere. Standing there, taking it all in, we found ourselves saying: what a shame we only get to stay here for one night.
But slowly, we began to notice that something felt… off. The place was eerily quiet. There was staff around — driving golf carts, walking the grounds — but no other guests in sight. It created an almost ghostly ambiance. Upon asking, we were told there were only six other guests. For a lodge with fifty rooms, that’s quite unsettling.
Dinner was served in a large wooden hall, decorated with dark materials and dimly lit with cold white light. In the middle was a long, set dinging table, longing for guests who will never come. Only three tables were occupied. It was awkwardly silent. The staff was kind and genuinely tried to make us feel welcome. But in terms of professionalism and polish, it didn’t meet the standards of a true five-star experience. The same could be said about the food.
What stood out most was the visible uncertainty among the staff. They asked for feedback a bit too often — including the chef, who went from table to table seeking input about every single dish from each of the eight guests in the room. While well-meaning, it felt more like they were looking for guidance than confidence in their service. They clearly cared, but seemed at a loss about what was missing — and how to make it better.
The next morning, after a breakfast that again didn’t match the expectations set by the lodge’s outward appearance, we left saying to each other: maybe it’s actually a good thing we only had to...
Read moreAlmost a month ago I was in this amazing spot with my friend celebrating her Bday. We were the only guests. We arrived very late at night because of our flight from the Kilimangiaro airport. No matter the late time, We had the most amazing welcome by Sylvy at the reception, Zacaria explaining us how much we were expected and Mensa and Samuel the premium chefs that prepared our welcome dinner and each of our delicious meals. The location is like Heaven and Sylvy, Zacaria, Samuel and Mensa are amazing people and the rest of the other helpers were simply amazing and let us feel like at home. Each detail was cured and took care of. The view of the green carved plateau of the Kilimamoja mountain is simply breathtaking We enjoyed our 2 nights and 2 days stay , what hung at the change of the light on the valley and on the mountain profile and we also made our way in the infinity pool. Zacaria is a great singer! He guided the Hakuna matata blessing song for my friend’s Bday celebration. If you are traveling in the area, this is the place where you want to be! don’t miss it out! Nature in the property is amazing! Check the yellow soft bark acacia tree (see pic) and all the blooming flowers!
Before I forget, I love the fact that you can have an outdoor private shower facing the valley! I think buoyed a lot, while my friend enjoyed the foamy but tub decorated with the ibiscus flowers by the ladies of the staff.
Thank you for all your hospitality, my dears. Hope to meet you there...
Read moreThe pros: Stunning rooms Great views, especially for sunrise Beautifully maintained garden
The cons: Clearly, something isn't running smoothly in this hotel and we felt it, from the moment we stepped foot inside. Our guess is problems with and/or within management.
the hotel had 5 (!) golf carts. We were traveling with a senior citizen who fully expexted to be transported to and back from her room when she saw the golf carts. Unfortunately, we were told that all 5 golf carts were broken down. I find that hard to believe. And if so, why is a hotel in that price range okay with having 5 non-working golf carts sitting at its entrance?
the food is not up to par with neither the stunning rooms/common areas not the price charged per night. The food is cantine food which is reheated before serving. Unfortunately, we had several dishes that were literally served cold. The quality of the food was mediocre.
the common areas weren't kept clean. The stains created by our cold drinks the night before still had not been cleaned the next day. Same with ashtrays not being emptied over night at the bar area. The two soap dispensers at the ladys' restroom didn't work. No staff member noticed and fixed it. Unacceptable!
the use of plastic: I haven't seen this much plastic being used in years!
We stayed at 5 different hotels during this trip and we have visited Tanzania 5 times in the past 3 years. Lake Manyara Kilimamoja has been the worst hotel...
