Key Stop Before the Summit – Barafu Camp We didn’t overnight at Barafu Camp, but stopped here for a lunch break during our Kilimanjaro climb. It’s the final major camp before the summit push, and many climbers start their midnight ascent from here. The camp sits in a dramatic, rocky landscape with incredible views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Even though we continued on to Kosovo Camp (about an hour’s climb further up), Barafu felt like a significant milestone. It’s a busy, high-altitude camp, and a great place to gather energy before the final push to Uhuru Peak.

This camp is a straight forward hike from Karanga camp. The camp sits at 4673m above sea level. At this camp, you can see the beautiful view of the Mawenzi peak and the Kibo peak. The camp is sloppy and since it is quite high, it is very cold and sometimes even snows. This camp serves as the base camp as you ascend to the Uhuru peak. Barafu camp is close to Kosovo camp which sits at around 5000m asl. Both of these camps have helipads

The base camp before the summit (though there is also Kosovo Camp at 4800 m but those camping up there need a special permit and the weather can be really bad / much worse than at Barafu). Barafu camp needs some cleaning and the toilets were smelly (like all the other camp toilets) Not much sleep is possible at 4600 m and it gets very cold during the night. The helicopter costs 3500 $ from Barafu down to hospital.

Listen to your body, always. I was about to leave at 10:30 at night, had a cough for two days and it became worse.

I chose not to summit, and that was the best decision. I was evacuated and taken to St. Joseph's Hospital. I was on the cusp on having high altitude sickness turn into pulmonary edema.

Great time though. And again, listen to your body. I wanted to summit, but my body knew better.

The destination is...
