Kibo Hut sits majestically at an awe-inspiring 4,720 meters above sea level. As you would expect at that altitude, the cold is biting and unforgiving. However, Kibo Hut itself is a pleasant surprise—modern, well-maintained, and thoughtfully equipped to make the harsh environment far more bearable.

The huts have electricity, reliable internet (yes, even up here!), and great beds that offer real comfort after a grueling day's climb. With a high-quality sleeping bag, you can withstand the freezing temperatures and actually enjoy a good night's rest—a priceless advantage when preparing for the final summit push.

One note of caution: while the signs optimistically indicate that the distance from Kibo Hut to Gilman’s Point is just 4 kilometers, do not be fooled. The journey is a test of endurance—an endless series of zigzags, meanders, and brutally steep elevation gain. It feels much longer, and the altitude makes every step an effort. It’s not just a climb; it’s a battle of the mind and spirit.

That said, Kibo Hut provides a perfect launchpad for the ultimate ascent to the Roof of Africa. With its unexpectedly modern amenities in such a remote location, it’s a vital and...

Its hard to put a rating on a hut thats 4720m above sea level.

Huts: Have bunk style lodging and the rooms are locked by your guides Toilets: Drop down toilets are away from the huts Water: There is no running water here, your porters will need to walk a few hours to get water for you, so be nice Electricity: There is no power sources up here to charge your phone.

If you are trekking up to the top they'll wake you up around 11pm to make the trek up to the top and back.

It's cold so you'll need a few layers, gloves...

Kibo huts is a campsite and lodging point that is located at the eastern base of Kibo volcanic cone of mt. Kilimanjaro. It is mostly used as a resting point by climbers on the Rongai and Marangu routes, on the day before their attempt to reach the summit. The campsite is one of the few on the mountain that offer lodging inside a built structure, reducing the necessity for tents. However, those on the Rongai route would still need tents for other campsites along the route or when the lodging is full. Altitude:...

I have taken two routes, Rongai and Marangu both of which pass through Kibo as the last camp before the summit hike. Kibo camp is my least favorite because it is the most crowded and therefore toilets are even dirtier than usual. The tents are packed up really close to each other. It is also not as pretty - maybe because of all the anxiety of the upcoming hike!
