Had a great 3 nights here. The drive to the lodge was bit bumpy and unpleasant, but that’s the price we pay to truly get off the beaten path and enjoy a serene getaway, in the shadow of both Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru.
The rooms might come across as a bit primitive upon entrance - tiny bathroom (even compared to Manhattan standards) with a door height so low that even short people have to bend down to enter, no lock on the front door, basic curtains barely blocking light, concrete flooring, tap water that’s not safe even for brushing teeth - but it’s part of the rustic “boma” design. All rooms are spaced apart from each other and facing in its own direction onto the savannah for maximum privacy. The outdoor patio facing the savannah is such a great place to unwind while sipping a coffee and taking in the imposing expanse of fhe savannah. If you’re lucky you can even catch a glimpse of wildlife on the horizon.
You can go on guided nature walks in the morning and visit the local school the lodge supports during the day, as well as partake in a spear throwing game and bonfire with goat bbq in the evening. These occur on a daily basis and are inclusive in the rate. Upon request, they also bring you coffee and cookies to your room during the in-person wake-up call. I’d definitely recommend this especially to catch the amazing sunrise (if you’re lucky, over Mt. Kilimanjaro).
Pool and sauna are added perks that get busy in the afternoon. Three meals are included every day and coffee and tea available throughout the day. The patio outside the restaurant has an amazing view over Mt. Kilimanjaro (that is, when clouds aren’t shrouding its peak). The natural setting of the lodge really sets it apart, as you find yourself in the pristine beauty of the Maasai Steppe amidst the savannah. We saw many zebras and gazelle on our morning walks, and others saw a great many other animals. All without even starting a safari!
Definitely try to stay for at least two nights. This way you won’t feel rushed and will truly get the most out of this amazing location and enjoy all the...

From the moment we were picked up by Boni till the last hakuna matata we felt cared, guided and cherished.
While in a complete wilderness of Tanzanian nature, Maasai serve high class hotel and dining experience. This blend of authenticity and luxury that is hard to believe exists anywhere else in the world.
It was such a joy to learn about Maasai culture first hand, be invited to join them at a campfire (and to taste the goat roast and special soup!), have nature walks with thorough explanation about healing nature of local plants and trees, visit the village.
But what made the trip completely unforgettable was people. Maasai are smart, hard working and absolutely hilarious. Make sure you learn, ask questions to understand their preserved culture and the impact of globalisation and technology on the tribe. Their wisdom is really a gift. Thank you Lasse, Boniface, Lucas, Unambuwe and everyone for having us over. Thank you chefs for preparing all the delicious, star-worthy meals.
Traveller's advice: 6 am wake-up coffee sounds a bit painfull, but it is one of the most amazing things to have with a view of a sunrise over Kili.
Caution: After you've been here, you life now revolves pretty much around planning on how to go back to...
