We loved our 2 night stay at Nyikani Tented Camp in Taragire. The staff was just incredible from the camp manager to the "talking shower" staff. (More on that feature later.) The camp manager, sorry I forgot to write his name down, was always available and genuinely interested in our comfort.
The location was perfect for us being near the Kuro Airport where we landed. It is also located far from the park gate so there were many fewer vehicles in this area. We saw so many animals in Tarangire and some were near the camp although none actually walked through it.
We did see the droppings of elephants on the trail leading to the tents.
The tents are located along a trail on both sides on the dining area. (6 on each side). We were in tent 9 and it was 200-250 meters from the dining area on a flat maintained trail. After dark, we called for an escort as suggested.
The meals were served in a beautiful open dining area and the food was all freshly prepared and served plated. We found our other safari lodges to often utilize a buffet and we prefer this option. Service in the dining area was exceptional. Drinks were a little expensive and there was a lack of options in liquors, but all in all we enjoyed the few drinks we had before dinner each night.
The ten itself was just fantastic for our first experience in this type of accommodation. There was a sleeping area and a separate bathing and toilet area in the tent. When you wanted to take a shower, you radioed the camp manager and in a few minutes a voice would call to you from outside the tent that the shower as ready. It is a camp shower where a bucket of heated water is raised up on the outside of the tent and then you open a valve to take a shower. If you run out of water, you call to the person outside and they raise another bucket. This is why they called it a talking shower. What fun! As you can see from the pictures, the view from our tent was amazing.
We also went on a 2 hour night safari with the staff of the Nyikani. We saw several nocturnal animals not in view during the day. Highly recommend this option.
This place was booked for us by our safari company so I am not sure of the actually price, but we thoroughly enjoyed out time here. What made it so special was the staff. The best we experienced on our 10...
Read moreThis was the first camp we stayed at on our safari. It has a beautiful setting, located in the far south of Tarangire Park. That means there are few other camps around and that you effectively have game drives on the way to and from the Camp. In fact the best elephant sitings of our entire safari occurred on the drive to the Camp from the Park entrance.||The Camp has 10 tents for guests along with a large dining tent and lounge tent. The food was excellent and far more than we could eat at any meal. You will not go hungry here.||A particular standout was our tent attendant Junior, who made us a welcome gift for our arrival. He brought the buckets of hot water for our showers and generally took care of whatever we needed at Camp. Our 6 am coffee and tea “wake-up” was always on time. Our laundry was washed, dried and returned to us the same day, and our tent was always clean and ready for us when we returned from a game drive or dinner. Junior could’t do enough for us, and his cheerfulness was a bright spot when we returned to Camp.||The Camp is fairly close to the Tarangire River and a large lake, both of which provided great areas for viewing wildlife. We drove by what must have been a head of 10,000 buffalo and saw 7 baby giraffes (about 2-3 weeks old) with 9 females in the road near our camp. Another day we stopped the truck and were literally surrounded by more than 200+ baboons. The Park has many beautiful, large baobab trees which were a real treat for us as we had never seen them before. Tarangire is not as well known as many of the other parks, but I would not have missed it has beautiful trees and foliage with rolling hills and is quite beautiful, along with having many elephants and other wildlife. And Kichuguu is located is the best place in the Park, near an airstrip, but otherwise isolated...
