It's going to be hard putting into words just how great the experience was but I'm going to try!
The lodge itself is in a very peaceful part of the African bush and it's a fun, interesting experience getting to it in a 4x4 up a bumpy dirt road. It's well worth the journey and when you arrive you get nothing but smiles from the amazing staff and a truly warm African welcome including a refreshing face towell and a cold glass of baobab juice.
The lodges are very spacious and super clean with comfortable beds and African made furniture. We had a nice hot shower powered by solar energy and electricity was always available to charge phones etc. The wi-fi generally worked well too.
The food they serve is fresh and very tasty and you will not be left hungry as they make sure you are very well fed with multiple courses and dishes for both breakfast and dinner. Tanzanian beers and South African wines are available to purchase and once you've eaten they will light a fire for you (an African television) on their terrace which is a perfect way to enjoy your drinks while listening to the sounds of the African bush.
I would recommend contacting the lodge directly when booking as they can sort out a package to also arrange your guide for the Mikumi National Park as well as tickets, permits, packed lunches etc. The guide they booked for us (Jonathan) was awesome. Really friendly, helpful and knew a lot about the animals we were looking for and where to find them. Thanks to him we saw multiple Lions, Elephants, Hippos, Giraffe, Monkeys and Baboons along with many other animals. We couldn't have asked for a better 2 day safari experience and it's something we'll never forget!
Finally, the staff. Every single one of them from start to finish have been amazing. All super friendly, warm smiles and can't do enough for you. They make this place special and I've never received better hospitality than I have at the lodge!
Daniel the manager is fantastic! So helpful and he went out of his way to help us with tickets to Zanzibar when I had issues booking them even though it wasn't something he was responsible for. He also kept me fully informed about everything in the weeks running up to our stay as well as giving helpful info and tips on various things in Tanzania. Muganga is the resident Maasai who not only looks after you and makes sure you're safe but also doubles up by helping in the food area, bringing drinks, lighting and maintaining the fire, walking you to your room at night and many other roles. He does all this with a massive smile on his face that really makes you feel welcome and loved!
All in all I would highly recommend this place to anybody and I would say don't hesitate to book a stay at the lodge! This is rustic, authentic, amazing Africa at its finest and you'll certainly leave the place sad that you have to go! Asante Mikumi...
Read moreI discovered this on TripAdvisor while looking for a place to spend a weekend after a week of hard work in Morogoro region. Overall, a great experience but with a couple of things that people should be aware of. First, the staff are great; helpful, friendly and trustworthy. The meals were fantastic including the lunches that we took on safari. The bungalows were also lovely. I have two suggestions: 1) needs better wifi. I know this is a challenge for the owners given the remote location but for those of us who have to work while we’re taking a few days off, it’s very important. 2) if you’re not going on safari, there’s not much to do other than to read. There is a nice lounge area and even a pool table but the chairs are straight-backed and not very comfortable for long sits. The lodge needs some chairs that are comfy and some that recline to allow for a more relaxing afternoon. Note also that there is no swimming pool.
The other negative aspect for us was the travel; it’s about 20 minutes on a bumpy gravel road then another 15 minutes on the highway to the game park. Fairly tiring and it prevented me from going out one afternoon. This won’t be an issue for many people but it was for this 60 year old who had just spent a week on bumpy Morogoro dirt roads.
One of the factors in my choosing this location was that we no longer had a vehicle after our work and they offered to drive us to the Dar es Salaam airport on our last day at a pretty reasonable price given the distance. Unfortunately, it was in one of their open safari vehicles without air conditioning. It was an uncomfortable 7 hour journey for us. If you require transportation to Dar from Mikumi Safari Lodge and you negotiate a trip with them, make sure you ask for a closed vehicle with a/c.
Overall, a lovely setting, great staff and food but somewhat inaccessible and in need of a better road, wifi, and things to do if one is not...
Read moreFrom the moment we arrived at the wooded hilltop retreat at Mikumi Safari Lodge, we were welcomed and treated like family. Daniel, the manager, had already helped me out via WhatsApp with changing our dates and arranging for transport to the lodge, as well as advising on activities and safaris, while Amani and Mgangaa were the most attentive and engaging co-hosts. Mgangaa accompanied us on two hikes, one to his relatives’ Masai village down the hill, and one along the hilltop ridge for the views and animal sightings. And the food at the lodge was delightful and varied, served in the lovely covered terrace where we often hung out learning more about Tanzanian life from our new friends. The cabins are roomy and immaculate, each with an outside deck, and their own bathroom. There is hot water all the time, solar powered electricity (supplemented with a generator) and absolutely everything works and is well maintained. Daniel proceeded to help us out with several transportation issues even after we left. This was a very memorable stay for us and we...
