We visited Mkonge hotel for having relaxed lunch together with friends. We had a good time until we were about to leave. Coming to our vehicle we noticed that somebody had broken into the car and stolen my bag with some money and credit card that was hidden under the drivers seat. When approaching the security guard they said that they hadnāt seen anything. When approaching the the management of the hotel they didnāt want to come and see us and just talked to us on phone, trying to lecture us about the rights in the free world. We only wanted their cooperation in talking to the police and find a solution to the problem. The security company started tu accuse us for setting up a plot and to frame them for the theft. We had to go to the police on our own and the hotel management and security company were not interested in working together with us in this. Their attitude and aggressiveness is way beyond what you van expect from a hotel on this level. Please, if you want to be safe, donāt go there. If you want be treated as a fellow human with dignity,...
Read moreThe hotel is under new ownership since we came last year. There is work being done around the hotel, such as improving the rooms, and a gym is being built. Unfortunately despite this disruption, the new owners have already increased the price by 20%. US$66 or £53 is a lot to pay for a hotel where there is no hot (or warm even) water, and things don't always work. I stayed in a ground floor room and had to keep the curtains closed as just outside the room was a building site. And the setting is lovely, but you can't access the beach from the hotel||Keep the old price until the work is finished, then put it up. At least then, people know what they're getting! We have been coming to Tanga once a year for many years, and have been staying at the Mkonge every time, but we won't...

When I first wrote a review, the above was true but recent events have really dampened my affections. The quality of service has steadily dropped. Several times now asking for couple of meals on their menu only to be told they are not available.
Worse, you have to be careful with your goods and money while in the compound. The guard, kitchen staff and other members of staff recently worked together to steal money from a friend's car. Kitchen staff delayed the meal so the other staff could break into the car and wipe CCTV evidence. It's a shame to lose faith in such a beautifully placed establishment. The last time I spent my money here is the last I do....
