Grand Sud, la maison de sable — Hotel in Maghreb

This is an excellent location on the edge of the Sahara desert, very quiet and comfortable. It requires a car or taxi from Douz. We stayed for 7 days. A great opportunity to unwind and use as a base to visit other locations (but you need a car). Mohamed is an excellent host and very helpful offering to organise different trips. The breakfasts were great and very filling with an amazing view of the sunrise over the Sahara through a large window. Mohamed organised a two night trip into the desert, which was incredible! Being picked up and dropped off at his front door. Our guides were fantastic, we stopped at different locations for each of our meals, cooking on an open fire including fresh flatbread at meal times. We went in February and the nights were cold (a jumper and thermals required for sleeping in the desert) and the daytime was warm - like the hottest day in September in the UK. Very pleased with our stay in “La maison de sable” (the sand house). 3 nights for a family with 2 kids (14 and 8 year old). ||Our host Mhamed and his wife were very welcoming and kind to us throughout our stay. Mhamed is a tourism professional and is very knowledgeable of the area and the south of Tunisia. He recommended a few amazing attractions, to which we drove to and all were very worth it. If you don’t fancy driving, you are right at the start of the desert and you can just take a short walk to the sand dunes or to a nearby palm trees forest. ||The rooms are authentic and as described, the area is very safe and you get to have great memories here. A very special place with very special people.

I would not lie if I said this stay was the best during our entire 2-weeks Tunisia journey. 🏆 Not because of the separate tiny building we were hosted in 🛖, or the open-hearted host and people we met here 😊, or the views of the desert at sunrise and sunset 😍, but because of it all. Staying here was a pure magic experience for me. 🪄

My recommendation would be to ask the host for a camel ride. 🐪🐪 We had a 2-hour one at dawn, and I loved it + the deal was better than many others you can find on the internet. 🌄🏜️
