This place is right on Lake Lyantonde, and is tranquil, green, and gorgeous. Low budget accomodation is basic but clean and private with an outdoor shower and toilet and path straight to the lake. Self-contained rooms were fairly priced and definitely a bit nicer if that's what you prefer. Tent area is flat and grassy, with a 360 degree view of the area. The whole Crater Lakes area has rolling green hills set against red dirt roads with lakes everywhere in between. Monkeys, birds, and pretty iguanas visited us! Steven, the manager, was friendly, accommodating, and checked on us every day. He even brought us a charcoal stove and cooking gear so we could could make our own meals. You can buy basic veggies and foods in the closest village (Kabata) 1km away. If you want, Steven can arrange tours and guides. It's also easy to wander around through the villages and small paths. If you are into quiet relaxation in a natural area, hiking, biking, and swimming, then you'll...
Read moreA magical place in the heart of the crater lakes, a quiet and pleasant corner with a hill overlooking one of the lakes and you can also camp here. We took a room with an outdoor toilet and shower and it was great. It is not a luxurious lodge but for us it was completely enough.
So why come here? Because Steven, the manager of the place, founded the place for one main purpose to finance the school that is under the complex and with it his orphanage. From many conversations with him and meeting the children we learned how significant the place is and how much it relies solely on donations and income from the camping. I highly recommend coming and meeting an exciting social project.
Steven tried to take care of everything for us He took us on 2 trips in the area according to things we wanted to see (a tour of coffee and vanilla crops, a tour between lakes and villages in the area, and a tour to magical waterfalls)
Regarding food, it seems to us that it is generally like this in the area, the meals are mainly local food, while his meals are a bit more than the local restaurants (and he has excellent filter coffee that he makes by himself!)
If you are looking to sleep in the crater lakes area and on the way maybe support an important cause here, you are welcome to contact Steven
It is recommended to close things in front of him before arrival Like the trips, to where and how much it costs, where to eat that day, etc
This is a lovely person with excellent English and it's just interesting to meet him and hear about his life.
Read moreWe had a lovely stay at Lake Iyantonde. The views are incredible and Steven, Ronnie and their brother (sorry we forgot his name - David?) were so warm and welcoming. We enjoyed a walking tour of the area, learning about vanilla growing and the many birds, with Ronnie. We also swam in the lake which was very nice. The food was great and the price so reasonable for the amazing location. There were a number of activities on offer thanks to Ronnie's tour company, great trek chimp adventures, but they were very relaxed about whether we did these (not pushing us to do a tour at all). The camp also supports the neighbouring school for children in need. Thank you for a...
