Great possibilities, but deceptive. We stayed at the Aldwark Manor on the 1st weekend of June to visit my step daughter at York University. We booked online, as the hotel seamed really nice. The room was not ready at 2pm, nor was any rooms from the 3 other people after us also waiting for their room. The front desk told us 3pm, as with everyone else. So it seamed that the house cleaner had to clean ALL the rooms in less than 30 mins. (strange...). We had a spa booked for my step daughter and myself while my husband went to play golf.
The spa changing rooms where not very clean, broken doors, no toilet paper holder, empty toilet paper on the floor, fabric on the seat very dirty, sink area full of water and messy, all in all not very clean! Spa reception where not particularly friendly and warm. We all had to sit in the lounge and waited one by one for our names to be called. My step daughter had an amazing treatment (scalp massage and facial) and was really pleased. I on the other had was very disappointed :( my head massage was nothing of a massage bc the therapist was busy blowing her nose the entire time (Alergies? ill?) she was very friendly but absolutely disappointed as it was not a massage at all. I then had a nail polish, which stained my nails yellow even after 25days! She did not put a base coat :( My 1 hour treatment was only 40 mins all together. So then again very disappointed.
After the treatment we went to get our room keys as the rooms where ready, the reception ask if I had a good treatment , I said not really, she then said your room is on the 2nd floor and avoided to ask why. Lost opportunity ...
We then go to the room and my step daughter wanted to have a shower in the room as the spa was not very clean. We waited over 10 minutes of letting the water run but no hot water. We called reception and a nice man came (manager?) turned the hot water tap on and within 1 min finally the hot water came! He then said that the room hasn't been used in a while and that would explain why there was no hot water!! But wait a second... I thought the room wasn't ready before 3? How did the cleaning lady clean the room? hummm.... somebody is laying, and having done hotel management and worked in 5 start hotels, the #1 rule is to have rooms cleaned as soon as possible!
The room has cheap looking 'want-to-be' antique furnitures. The bed was really comfortable and the pillows where nice. The room was not very clean, lot's of dust on top of lamps, holdings etc. The bathroom was not cleaned very well, a big blob of old soap was on the walls of the shower. No slippers, no bathrobes.
Breakfast is nice (the scrambled eggs Yumm!). and the morning manager (polish lady?) was very friendly and very helpful with a happy personality and smile. Most of the other staff where very boring and clueless of the business.
I used the gym on Saturday morning and wanted to get a bottle of water, but was told to pay 1£. As I am a guest of the hotel I don't think it's right that I cannot charge it to my room as I have left a credit card deposit when checking into the room! But I was told they are different tills and must be paid cash only. Humm... so now I have to run back to my room to get 1£?? The gym reception allowed me to bring them the 1£ when I came back later.
The Bar. Well this could have been a great place, who doesn't love a hotel bar!? The barman wasn't very exciting, so you have to go to the bar to order drinks as there is no service. You also have to ask for chips and pay additional for a tiny bag. Well guess they never got the memo that when you give your customers little salty nibbles they order more drinks... oh well...
So unfortunately I was pretty disappointed with the Aldwark Manor. IT HAS SOOOOO MUCH POTENTIAL !!! Why cut all the corners with cheap makeovers, furnitures, untrained staff? For our next visit to York we will have to look elsewhere. York is such a charming city, they are so friendly and it just oozes charm, so the possibilities of the Alwark even more...
Read moreA poorly managed hotel and outdated spa. My wife and I attended for a spa day that included a lunch. After our arrival at the spa reception we completed our convent forms, after which we were led to the restaurant for our lunch. There we were served by a woman who couldn’t put a smile on her face even if her life would depend on it. Who employed her, I just don’t know. She wouldn’t know what service was if it would hit her on the head. Make sure you get your question for salt and pepper, or sugar for your coffee, right in at the moment she delivers your food or drinks, as she couldn’t get away from the table quick enough. We then went to the spa for our afternoon. The facilities are outdated, worn, and not very clean. We spent well over an hour at the indoor pool, and some paper cup and some other bits and pieces were on the floor around the pool the entire time. At no time did we see any member of staff to check if everything was alright and perhaps make sure no rubbish was left behind. We then had our massage. Fair enough, I really enjoyed mine. I think the masseuse said she was called Rain (I may have misheard that) and she did a great job. My wife however had another girl, who decided halfway to leave the room while my wife had her face covered, so not sure what was happening. After a long wait my wife felt the need to ask if she was still there, only to be met by an ear-deafening silence. She finally came back into the room, holding a cup of water. She thought it was a good idea to just create a 5 minute break smack in the middle of a session without telling my wife, leaving her there. She already had my wife waiting to be collected for the massage, and then stopped halfway through, and did not make up for that lost time. The massage itself was also not great. Very disappointing overall for my wife. We then were led to the relaxation room that had loungers, all with used towels on them. They don’t even bother to straighten them out. Who wants to lay down on towels used by strangers?! Maybe I’m just pedantic? Don’t think so, though. Finally we were ready to leave for a nice shower at home (no way did we want to use the facilities in the hotel), only to be told we had to go back to the restaurant to pay for a coffee we had at lunch. They couldn’t take the payment at the spa, despite them being able to take payment for the spa facilities and it all supposedly being one and the same venue. If only Miss Miserable in the restaurant would have told us, it would have saved us having to trail around the hotel. That last part was a minor inconvenience, it only shows it is poorly managed. Poorly managed overall. Why is no one training the woman in the restaurant? Or set standards for the massage treatments? Or make sure the facilities are inspected regularly? It was a poor show, and they will not see us back there. Utterly disappointing.
Last tip to the spa staff: a spa is often used to celebrate a special occasion, such as a birthday. It takes so little effort to check the birthday date on the form you have your guests fill out. You should give it a try. You might be surprised how often you’ll see a date similar or at least close to the actual day, honestly! It takes very...
Read moreI recently visited Aldwark Manor with a freind for a spa afternoon. This was a gift from my freind and we were very much looking forward to it. On arrival we were greeted by the beautiful suroundings and the. impressive Manor. At reception the young man who served us was very polite and helpful. Included in our deal was a pastry and a drink. We decided to have that first then use the facilities. The young man said he would show us around afterwards. It was my first visit, my freind had been once before. Unfortunately when it came to that point he seemed to find it difficult to leave reception and chose to do our ' tour' from behind the desk. Aldwark is massive. We spent a good 10 minutes of our time wondering around familiarisng ourseleves with the layout. My freind had a treatment booked costing £44. She was 15 mins late going in, and for the first 5-10 minutes when she was in the treatment room the girl went in and out of the room several times due to forgetting things or just doing whatever it was she was doing!! The treatment however was ok but sadly not worth £44. Whilst she was having her pedicure I went to the gym. I'm a regular gym goer at my local leisure centre and know what standards to expect when it comes to cleanliness. This gym was dirty. Every piece of equipment I went on was filthy. I had to clean them before using them as well as after. The choice was good but i was put off most things because they weren't clean. I'd agreed to meet my freind in the pool. We had already been in the changing rooms to drop off our bags. Sadly they were also very disapointingly dirty. Old shampoo bottles and water bottles left on the side. Tired looking furniture and the toilets had tissues on the floor. The floor was dirty, not sure when it had last seen a mop! Hairs and other bits had collected in the corners everwhere, the shower floors were the same. I was so glad I'd taken my flipflops. The pool side wasn't much better. It all looked very tired and in need of a good clean in the very least. However I did enjoy my swim and the steam room as long as I could divert my eyes. We ate at the bar afterwards and that was nice. Served by a lovely young lady who was very helpful. It is with regret that I have found myself writing this review. This was a gift. It's therefore with a heavy heart that I've found it necessary. To sum up. In my opinion the gym and pool need thorough deep clean. I've been to similar venues that were far less impressive as a venue but 100 percent cleaner. I know what I would choose. It seems such a shame that this is the case because Aldwark Manor has so much to offer. I look forward to hearing from the manager...
