You won't be disappointed by the beautiful stone exterior, interior lobby, ground floor ceilings or the warm welcome by the lovely receptionists.||||However, for £320 for 2 nights bed & breakfast, our expectations from the website of the pool, bedrooms & sauna were of a well earnt indulgent weekend away being spoilt with good food, drink, facilities and the views. Unfortunately, though, once entering our room and then subsequently experiencing the hotel's food & beverages, it was like walking back into the 1980s. ||I completely understand the difficulties in maintaining old buildings, however there is no excuse for:||dirty, dusty bathroom floor, a wooden toilet seat (wooden!) , completely rusted toilet roll holder, scalding hot tap with no warning, cold towel rail (which means you have to have new towels daily as they don't dry) no bath mat, 1980's single shower cubicle with possibly an even older 2" shower head. ||We did have a lovely, comfortable bed, however we had dirty drawers & cobwebs and I know this is a little thing but the complimentary beverages only ran to 4 t bags, 2 cheap coffee sachets and 4 pots of milk, no hot chocolate or biscuits.||On arrival, as there was no view from our bedroom, I wanted to take my book and read in the lovely drawing room, which had an incredible ceiling and had a super view of the Black Mountains. I asked for some coffee, but was told that until the restaurant opens at 7, I'd have to make do with the flasks of luke warm coffee or tea on a table outside the hotel. At that point, we decided to go into Hay for coffee and biscuits.||On our return, we went to find the pool area, all I can say is that the website photo is extremely well edited to look spa like, not at all the reality.||Disappointed with the evening menu, we also decided to eat out. We recommend The Three Tuns and Casa Bianca.||We slept well and looked forward to a lovely breakfast to make up for the previous day. Unfortunately, breakfast consisted of some basic, very well cooked items along with a few cereals. As I don't eat these, I asked for a croissant, yoghurt or fruit (normal hotel alternatives) but was told they don't offer these. Tea and coffee again were available only in catering flasks (pre made).||I then spoke in depth to reception about all our views and was given Laura's (Hotel Manager) card and told to email her. I explained that she could inform Laura of my comments herself, and then Laura could contact me direct to discuss them. Disappointingly, I have never heard back from Laura.||We then left to have a lovely breakfast in Hay - Cosy Cafe and did the same on our 2nd morning too at The Granary. Highly recommend both.||||On chatting to many locals during our stay in the area, our experiences seem to be the norm.||||I just wanted a weekend of feeling spoilt; good service, clean facilities, good food and drink. I could overlook the dated facilities, because this is an old hotel and most of these issues are out of their control and in fact why not embrace the fact that it is quirky and dated - make sure people are aware of these and don't hide it on the website. However, you then MUST ensure that you spoil your guests with good service, clean rooms, decent tea and coffee available in the lounge, a lovely breakfast (with some table service) and a good evening menu.||||Unfortunately, being quoted so much, our expectations failed to match the cost. On check out, we were offered a £60 discount by the lovely receptionist (the discount was from Laura, the elusive Hotel Manager) however, I still felt this was too much and only agreed to pay £160 in total for the 2 nights bed only (as we did not eat the poor breakfast).||I was very disappointed that "Laura" did not attempt to speak or contact me throughout our stay and left it to her lovely receptionists to deal with me - this is very poor management.||We will not be staying again and if you are looking for a special stay away, we do not recommend this hotel at all. Instead, try The Baskerville House just...

Read moreArriving in Clyro on a rainy, foggy, dreary January evenng 2 years ago, desperate to find accommodation, my friend and I followed signs up a long, dark drive and came upon this hotel. We prefer quirky, old-fashioned accommodations with character and this one, which we stumbled upon by accident, turned out to be an amazing experience, the highlight of our trip.
So, can you ever go back again? In planning a second trip to Englnd and Wales, my freind and I decided we had to try. And so it was that we found ourselves back at the Baskerville Hall Hotel for 2 nights this March. We reserved the same "executive" room, made arrangements to arrive on Wednesday as before, and held our breath that we would not tarnish our previous wonderful memory by trying to relive it. To say that the visit exceeded our expectations would not be an understatement! This huge old mansion has been kept in excellent condition by the current owner, modernized, without sacrificing the fabluous period decor, detail, and ambiance of an era past. There was some repainting and carpet upgrade since our last visit in public areas, but the beautiful ceilings and fixtures were just as we remembered them. Everything worked perfectly in our very large room. The beds were very comfortable, and the bathroom was well appointed. There was a tea and coffee service in the room. We were extremely comfortable and slept well.
We arrived on Wednesday hoping to sit in on another night of music by the Baskerville Hall Acoustic Wednesday performers who advertise themselves as "A weekly musical get-together... at this beautiful, historic venue, set in parkland at the edge of Clyro... No amplification paraphernalia - just come and play, sing and join-in in a friendly, inclusive atmosphere." As on our previous visit, there was a big circle of musicians playing every instrument from kazoo to Celtic drum to fiddle, singing, and/or reciting poetry. Show tunes to Welsh ballads, to rock hits to original compositions, amazing to find such a talented group of musicians in the middle of the Welsh countryside! A day was spent in Hay on Wye, an always interesting village. for the bookstores and weekly Thursday market, and to check on the castle restoration.
Our "included" breakfasts were made to order each morning. The staff fussed over us, nothing was too much trouble for them. Their main concern, since we were vegetarians, was whether "just" perectly cooked eggs and toast with cereal was enough for us to eat. We got the same service from the front desk, and were happy to have a chance to exchange greetings with David, the owner, who is very actively involved in the day to day operations. He followed up on one of our requests by supplying contact information for the acoustic folk so we can stay informed of their events.
This hotel is lovely, very tastefully decorated, well managed, and the Arthur Conan Doyle stories about the TRUE origin of the Hound of the Baskervilles are facinating. The hotel sits on 120 acres in a beautiful river valley so the atmosphere is "country". There is hiking directly from the hotel and many sorts of leisure activities available near by. We have thoroughly enjoyed both visits here and look forward to the day we will return. On Wednesday, of course,...
