Highly disappointed after our stay here!!

We stayed here for two nights (Thursday-Saturday) and we will not be returning. To begin, the walls are extremely thin and you can hear absolutely everything which resulted in us being woken at 7am after an evening of travel.. so that set us off on a bad note.

The second night we were attending a wedding and arrived back at the hotel at around 12:30am. Upon arrival, we were frustrated to realise that our room key wasn’t working. We tried calling the phone number provided on the website however we were unable to get through and we didn’t receive any communication after leaving various voicemails. After an hour and a half of calling and searching for alternative contact numbers, we had no option but to ask other guests for any contact numbers that they were provided with in their rooms…we felt this was completely unfair but this was our last resort!! We finally found a number and after a very unsympathetic call, the owner finally arrived half an hour later to let us gain entry the room.

The sheer lack of communication is ridiculous!! The only contact number available online was completely non responsive and the only way we were able to get in touch with someone was through a guest that called one of the chain hotels! Without the knowledge of the other guest that had stayed at one of the chain hotels, we would not have been able to gain access to our room. This completely ruined our time and after a day full of high spirits, we were left feeling deflated and extremely tired following another noisy morning.

We are not the type of people to leave reviews etc but we feel extremely let down and the owner didn’t seem to care or have any regard to our feelings. He simply claimed ‘this hasn’t happened before’ although the receptionist told us they had another guest the previous night that had a problem with their room key.

If you want to stay at a hotel where support during the evening is non existent, this...

This place is a complete overpriced shambles, we were booked in for Christmas and boxing day 2018 the Milton room is an extension of the building with no privacy, the window to the bedroom faced directly onto the entrance to the car park were people enjoying a drink outside could look directly into your room, as there was no blinds or net curtains. the Christmas meal was £75 per head, we were booked for our meal at 3pm, we stilled hadn't received our dessert by 5.30, the main meal, "Christmas dinner" Turkey, "2" yes 2 roast potatoes, 2 baby carrots, 2 sprouts, and a small portion of cauliflower cheese!!!!! If never experience such a over priced, rediculously long wait between courses. We stay in alot of top end hotels, so we were happy to pay the price, we were not happy to be ripped off !To top it all we had someone banging on our bathroom window at 8.30, which was a frightening experience, I might add, when we were getting ready to go into the pub for Christmas night drinks, to find an extremely distressed lady asking us could we help her as she was locked out of her room !! Her room was in the main building ( the pub ) which we then found out to be all locked up, in total darkness. This poor lady and her elderly mother were locked out of the building, the reason being that they had had their Christmas dinner at 12pm and were hungry for a snack at teatime to be refused and told they would need to travel out to the nearest garage to a Costa coffee to get any snacks. Then to their horror came back to find they were locked out, there is so many bad points I could continue with, but all I will say is we refused to stay for boxing day. This place is over priced over rated and god only knows how it won 4 in the bed, that was the reason we chose to go here. Be warned all what you see on the telly is not all what...

If this had been for the individual members of staff 'I would give 5* but the awful overall experience in other ways merited one - hence my 2* rating. And very comfy beds, fluffy towels, lovely old building with quirky decor. A longer review is submitted with more details, but in short: We had a very disappointing time, sadly. It is such a shame because it could be a really lovely place. We initially found several slightly annoying facility issues, but they were ones which we could laugh off.... Why have a lamp when the flex won't reach a socket?? Pathetic Christmas decorations were disappointing and then it has to be one of the poorest Christmas lunches we've had. Then no provision made at all for any guests wanting food after the lunches were served. Not even a sandwich..... the kitchen shut down .... No outside lighting on in the evening, so I tripped and fell on the gravel outside the main entrance. Next, we were actually LOCKED OUT of the hotel when we returned from finding a takeaway sandwich at 9.45pm. All the staff had left the premises..... AND No lights on outside anywhere - all in the dark so I tripped up.... Huge pile of un-scooped dog-poo which found my shoe, just outside the entrance - a very sad ending. Extortionate bill to settle in the light of both our experience and quality of stay. Although, should it have lived up to its previous expectations - it could, and would have been, good value ...... And most of all - the lack of any willingness to apologise and own any of their mistakes. That was the most disappointing. We went with high hopes..... we left rather...

I was out for the afternoon with my Mum whom I don't see often enough, she suggested the Black Horse for lunch as she knew it from delivering there. I'm glad she did. As we turned into the drive towards the car park she noted the hollow metal sculpture of the horse rampant which I didn't spot until we left. Having parked up in the large car park we walked in through the gravelled beer garden where I was going to greet the two characters seated there but suddenly realised that they were mannequins! As we entered the building we were greeted warmly and seated in what seemed to be the coolest spot on a steamy hot day. We both ordered the burgers, when they came, served on a board they were perfectly cooked and delightfully delicious, the chips I believe were cooked in a beef tallow blend and the equally delicious relish lifted the flavour still further. When it came to our dessert we plumped for the ganache which is incredibly dense but so richly delicious that it could actually do to be smaller, the kirsch cherries and the sprigs of lemongrass cut through the incredible chocolatelyness to again lift the amazing dessert from the sublime to ridiculously heavenly. Their service is excellent and the staff friendly. 150/100 definitely going to go back, there is a great menu to work my way through. By no means the cheapest but the food is worth every penny!! P.S As Mum lives locally we didn't need to try the rooms but the place is beautifully presented and well equipped for a wonderful weekend (or week day) stay.

A little gem of a place! Myself and 2 colleagues each booked a room as we were working in the area, and it turned out to be a great find. The bar, rooms and garden are pleasant and welcoming, as are all the staff who are happy to accommodate special requests (I needed my breakfast to go as was leaving early, no problem!). My room was Kauto Star (they're all named after race horses I think) and it was like a little suite, spacious and we'll presented with a comfy bed, sofa, smart TV, iron, hairdryer, dolce gusto coffee machine and kettle, mini fridge, full size bath and shower and plenty of space for everything. I found 2 orange juices and a bottle of water in the fridge, and 2 curly wurly chocolate bars by the kettle, random but a nice touch! Can't speak for the other rooms but my work mates said they were also nice. The owner was friendly and had a chat with us in the garden for a while, before offering us a discount on our next visit (we are up that way a few more times for an ongoing job). The food was absolutely delicious, good size portions and quality meat, we each had a different type of burger and ribs for starters, all spot on. All in all it was a genuine great find and looking forward to staying there again.

Te most amazing hotel stay have ever had, although it was more personal than a hotel stay. Food was out of this world. Every meal from breakfast to evening meal was perfection, as was the service from every member of the team we met here. Our room was outstanding, little touches made it even better. We ended up staying 2 nights instead of one and would have stayed more if we weren't returning to work the next day !! Could not of asked for a better stay anywhere!! Our fur baby loved it she settled straight away, My wife told me it was her only go to place from now on and loves everything about it so happy wife happy life. She even wants to come here for a weeks holiday rather than our usual place !! Thank you to Sally, Steve and Tom and the amazing team here see you again very soon.
