Stayed in Calder room last night. Booked via booking.com, rated as 3 star with an 8.5 rating. £121.50. States river view but there’s privacy screen stuck on windows so no view. I would not give any rating given the option and would advise against booking. Arrived an hour before attending a local event, leaving me no option to find another place to stay. Absolutely awful experience. Dirty, stinking, cold and dangerous place. The exterior is a mess, rusted fencing, overgrown area, mess piled around the grounds, filthy door and windows. On arrival rang the bell. A young man, very quietly spoken opened the door and let us into a very dim lit passageway that smelled unpleasant, asked for ID and handed me a key for Calder, ground floor en-suite triple room, this key also fits the main and internal door so you just come and go as please but leave key on desk before 10am for checkout. On entering the room the smell was overwhelming and the decor and cleanliness shocking. Walls, carpet, furniture, lamp and pillows all heavily stained. Paint chipped off all skirting, windowsills, window shutters broken and dangerous. Bathroom door doesn’t fit the frame. Towels and bedding clean but thin with holes. Cobwebs and dust weeks old. Dangerous electrical wires all around the ground floor. I’m not a fussy traveller and just wanted a clean no luxury comfortable bed for the night. Being in a hurry to get to an event and not returning to room until after 1am I had no chance to speak to staff but before leaving this morning I tried to gain the attention of staff but no one to be seen. The other guests on ground floor had left keys on desk before us and room doors were open. I looked in and they were of better standard but no 3 star....

I would not recommend anyone to stay here, even for free. Our room had a horrible smell, like damp/metallic/stale cigarettes, smelled as if an old alcoholic tramp had been living in it. The whole building is tatty, old and dirty and very unkempt. The carpet had multiple stains and burn holes, the bathroom door had a huge gap aligned with the toilet, holes in towels and bath mat, wooden window shutters hanging off in parts with wood rot, DIY plug sockets attached to bedside tables with wires running round the bed thick of dust, windows were scruffy, bedding appeared to be clean but full of holes, the pillows were stained yellow. Hairs and something unidentifiable splattered all over bathroom walls as well. Staff seemed to be shocked at our arrival running around flustered and then again when someone else arrived and rang the door bell, they also told us our room key could unlock the main building door and internal door, which led us to think all keys could access any room in that case? we stayed in the ground floor Calder room which isn’t shown anywhere online and it’s clear why as we got the worst room in the place. Outside was equally as bad, piles of rotting wood and overgrown trees and weeds made it an eyesore. We aren’t fussy or hard to please, a clean comfortable place to stay for a night when visiting is all we require but this place is stinking and I’d strongly advise not to visit, which is a shame because the building and grounds has the potential...

I checked in with my daughter for an intended 6-night stay. We were given a room on the ground floor and there were no curtains which we thought was odd. There was a strong smell of damp and we instantly noticed how dirty the room was. Dust everywhere, rips in the sheets, old furniture and an empty(ish) bag of coke on the mantle piece!! |We didn’t have any confidence that the sheets were changed between guests. The whole place just felt very run down and neglected.|We decided we were just going to stay 1 night and move on but my daughter suddenly said that someone was looking through the window - the bottom half of the windows were frosted and a man was pressing his face up against the glass to peer inside which understandably really upset my daughter. I repeatedly asked who was in their gardens peering in but the guy just played dumb. The garden is sealed off so it was obviously a member of staff.|We called a taxi and checked out immediately and are now in a wrangle to get our money back.|Please please read other reviews and don’t book this...

The only fault is the lack of on site parking, bit cramped.
