Well where to start with this hotel....When we first arrived we were greeted by a short drive way up to the hotel and a small garden at the front...not “extensive grounds” like described by the hotel, the one reason why we chose here so we could walk round the “beautiful gardens” with the dogs, there wasn’t even any where to walk outside of the hotel as it was straight onto a road and nothing else around, what a joke....we went up to our rooms and were surprised to see dead wasps on the furniture and the window sills in the corridor, the rooms looked like they were hostel room back in the 50s, the rooms where not cleaned at all, bits on the floor, broken wardrobe doors, cracked light in the bathroom, corrosion on the mirror, toilet didn’t flush, no hot water in the taps at night, shower was pathetically slow, the list goes on. One of the rooms was a lot bigger than the other one, the biggest room was only just big enough for double occupancy, the other room was so small it didn’t even have enough room for two chairs, I asked the hotel to switch the small room but they had none available and went straight into defensive mode when I asked. As we were in the middle of no where we had no choice but to eat in the hotel, we are quite fussy and 3 of us wanted burger and the other wanted a pie. When we ordered we were told abruptly that we could only have 1 burger with no explanation as to why. We ended up ordering a pie, a burger and just cheesy chips as there was nothing else we liked. This food came out within 5 minutes of ordering, what pie and burger takes only 5 minutes to cook? My assumption is that the food is pre cooked in the day ready to heat up and serve on the night. We hardly got any sleep as the rooms are not sound proof at all, every step and every creak could be heard plus a bright light coming from the massive gap in the door. There was also a skylight in the smaller room which we had to stand on a chair to shut the blind as there was no pole or anything. We reluctantly went down for breakfast the next day, there were now live and dead wasps in the hallway, which is concerning to me as my partner is highly allergic, we asked the staff where we should sit and he told us anywhere, when the manager came to take our order he told us “we shouldn’t be sitting here!” And spat his dummy out in a little hissy fit, I understand with the COVID crisis that tables have to be allocated, cleaned etc but we were told to sit anywhere! And even if this isn’t the case then you don’t moan at your guests you moan at the staff for allowing it. The breakfast was ok, nothing to rave about. I am not one to complain to a hotel especially when they are cooking your food, you never know what they will do to it so my complaint went to them via email. They responded to me and told me they didn’t notice the wasps....look at the pictures, how could you possibly miss them! Never mentioned anything about the cleaning, completely ignored it because he knows I was right, admitted the rooms needed renovating, well do them then? He just made excuses after excuses and ignored half of my complaints. I emailed him again to get answers for the complaintS he ignored and asked for a refund for 1 room which I think is more than fair on my side, he ignored the email, I emailed again and surprise surprise I’m still waiting for a response. This hotel is dirty (you do know we’re in the middle of a global pandemic right?) rooms dated and broken and run by a pompous idiot. Do not stay here as you will be highly...
Read moreWe visited Broughton Craggs Hotel for Sunday carvery lunch last week after seeing their Facebook post promoting their meals. We phoned in advance to check if they were dog friendly which we were assured they were. The grounds look impressive as you approach, however on closer inspection, everything about the building looks"tired". No doubt a big injection of tlc would be costly. Undeterred we ventured in to the bar area to get drinks. The view over the fells was beautiful and there seemed to be a nice spacious dining area . However, fellow dog owners be warned....we were then ushered into a much smaller room, without any windows at all and complete with projector screen wall, quite out of place in a dining area, it no doubt doubles up as a meeting room. A musty smell completed the scene, together with jaded decor and wallpaper from my mother's living room circa 1980s, in this dog room", as dogs are not allowed in the main area. We did feel a little bit like lepers! The lager we were served tasted particularly musty also, so much so, we couldn't finish our drinks for fear of being ill. It was like it had been sat in the lines for a length of time midweek perhaps. I am not particularly fussy, but really it was undrinkable. The beef we were served, I have to say was tasty and well cooked, however the young waiter failed to inform us of the whereabouts of the vegetables and potatoes etc, so we had to go searching ourselves....to find them next door in the much more presentable main room....from which we were banished! These were in a help yourself carvery/ buffet arrangement. They were mediocre....slightly warmer than lukewarm but certainly not hot. The Yorkshire pudding was far too well done to be enjoyable sadly. We ate our meal which was OK value for money for the £12 each, however couldn't finish the beer, so returned the half drunk drinks to the bar as we paid our bill. We didn't mention to the barman as we had already decided we wouldn't be returning. He also never asked if everything was OK, or questioned why we hadn't finished our drinks. We don't normally grumble, but just thought we would drop this review on here as a heads up to fellow dog owners, that being dog friendly is not always what it seems....beware....you too may be subjected to...
Read moreI booked this hotel to spend a few nights away with my daughter. We found it OK, although don't trust your sat nav as there is a very tight turn it tries to send you down. There is a big car park and the grounds look lovely as you drive up. We checked in Ok, the girl who was there was very friendly. We had rooms 5 & 6 on the first floor. I had booked both double rooms with shower and this is what we had. Room 5 smelt a bit 'doggy', but once in there I didn't notice it so much. Room 6 does not have a window that you can look out of, it is a skylight. It does have a blind, but there is a gap at the bottom letting the light in. Both rooms had bathrooms, but very small. The shower cubicles were not a very generous size and there is nowhere to put your toiletries in the showers. Everything was clean though. The food at the hotel was delicious. We arrived Sunday afternoon so had the Carvery. So much choice of veg and the meat was lovely. Breakfast was amazing! You help yourself to juice, tea, coffee, cereal, yogurts and there was grapefruit and prunes. Would have been nice for there to be a basket of fresh fruit. They ask if you want toast and then that is brought to you and they take your order for cooked. They have a very good chef, the poached eggs were amazing and everything came out hot and fresh. Good choice of things too.|We ate in the hotel one night and the food was really nice then too. |Staff were friendly, though some need to smile a bit more. All in all, we had a nice stay.|One down point, even though everything was clean, they need to go round and hoover the ceilings and beams in rooms and clean the windows. There were lots of cobwebs about and spiders. As someone who is not a fan, this was a bit of a problem the I had to not think about. Also, there was a spoon under the...
