Liked: This is not the worst campsite we've stayed at but it's definitely far from the best and is certainly the noisiest.
The pros:
We ate at the on-site restaurant/bar with very low expectations and we're happy to say it exceeded them. The food was decent for what it was and good value.
As well as the handy on-site restaurant/bar there is a small shop at reception selling gifts, snacks and easy camping meals as well as locally sourced meat and dairy, and a swimming pool.
The views from the open camping field are lovely.
*The washing-up room was spacious and had a fridge.
The location (in our opinion, the main saving grace of the campsite) - between Wookey and Cheddar, it's a great base for exploring the gems of Somerset.
Disliked: The areas that need improvement:
The showers:
-The lights in the showers are operated by sensors rather than switches (despite the sign in the shower indicating a switch) and these sensors don't work very well at all. Sometimes the light would come on in the shower and sometimes I'd be jumping and waving my arms and I'd still have to shower in the dark.
-The temperature and power. The shower rooms are next to the washing up room and when someone uses the hot water in the sinks, the showers slow to a dribble and you have to get closer to the shower pipes so you can still get water on you. This burnt my shoulder a few times because one of the pipes was really hot. For my husband, the showers stopped altogether at one point and he had to stand there soapy and cold for a while until it began working again.
The drainage. There are three showers and only one drain in the middle shower with a hole between the cubicles that allows the water to drain to the middle shower. After a busy period, there is lots of hair and dirt in the drain hole and if you are showering in the middle shower then you end up standing in the dirty water that pools up from your two neighbours.
The men's toilets were filthy according to my husband.
You have to pay a pound for some water in the family bathroom and you have to pay 20p for a short use of the hairdryer or plug socket in the ladies. I always find things like this quite petty and poor value. The 20p didn't dry my hair and I have quite fine hair, so you're looking at an extra £1 a day or so per head of hair you need drying.
The water in the swimming pool was filthy (the smaller toddler pool was okay though).
The noise at night was unreasonably loud. The rules state minimal noise between 10pm and 7am but this was not enforced. It was gone midnight when it quietened down on the first night of our stay. The pitch we were on was very small and by a main walkway so it was a high-traffic area, and there was loud music and talking from the adults as well as screaming from loads of children running around. I'm not in favour of a strict and silent campsite, but the behaviour and noise were beyond normal, and it disrupted the following day's early start.
Bucklegrove has the potential to be 4 or even 5 stars, but in its current state, it is not well-kept and definitely not worth the money. Stay here only if you're looking for a place to get drunk and let your kids run around...
Read moreWe broke up our journey to Devon with a 2 night stay at Bucklegrove Caravan Park in our VW campervan. Our pitch was a hard standing in the top field area with other camper vans, motorhomes, tents and long term tourers. The EHU point was in a bit of an inconvenient place at the far side of the pitch next to our and not placed equally between the two or even at the nearer side of the neighbouring pitch which could have been a bit of a health and safety trip hazard. |Our pitch was right next to the shower and toilet block which wasn't really an issue at all regarding smells or noise. Camping etiquette was observed well with no noise or disturbance during the 'quiet hours'. The old shower block needed some tlc and showed it's age but the facilities in the block were perfectly acceptable. ||The heated swimming pool although small is perfectly adequate for children. In the male changing area there are no lockers for belongings or valuables. There are no cubicles for privacy or dignity when changing and only one shower that is open to the main changing area. ||The staff were helpful and friendly. An issue of a tap that wasn't working in the older toilet block was reported and fixed in an impressively short time. |A short walk down towards the reception and shop and past the bar and restaurant takes you to a shower block which was much larger and clearly a lot newer. The toilet and shower facility there were much better than in the older block in the top field. ||We had a meal in the bar area which was very nice and plentiful. ||The pool table is in the most ridiculous place and makes it unusable for anything other than a bit of fun or a laugh. For anyone keen or interested in playing pool forget it. The table is in a room that is a direct route to the toilets and the room is so small that proper use of a cue is impossible. ||The only other criticism I could say is the state of the roads in some places. There are some sections that have large potholes and ruts and clearly need some repair pretty soon. ||We enjoyed our stay at Bucklegrove and we would happily stay there again and therefore have no reason not to...
Read moreJust returned from a few days away, our first stay at Bucklegrove Holiday Park. We picked this site as it had won an award and we thought it would be a good bet for a stay with the grandchildren, it was also close to a few good child friendly attractions to keep them entertained. |The site its self was perfectly adequate for our needs, the shower block nearest our pitch was always clean and the shower cubicles a good size, and plenty of hot water. Possibly not the most modern facilities but fine. Washing up facilities again adequate for our needs.| Our pitch 129 was a tad noisy at times as the other side of the hedge was the road and parking for some sort of reservoir ,which seemed to attract cars with boom boxes and late night revellers! Not at all the fault of the campsite, but could have done without listening to teenage caterwalling from the reservoir at 11pm, would have been more choosy with our pitch had we known beforehand. |The Clubhouse offered good value for money we thought, ate there twice in the evening , both times no complaints re the food, menu was fairly basic fare but just what the kids liked and the adult menu was fine too, good steak and chips. The guitarist on Wednesday evening was excellent. the Thatchers fruit ciders on offer in the bar were just what we needed at the end of a hot day, only wish they had stocked them in the shop and we could have taken a few back to our campervan (missing a trick there). |If I had one complaint (it isnt really a complaint more of a suggestion), that is there could be a better, larger area for children to run off a bit of steam, as a family friendly park the children's play area is very small for the amount of pitches, and there isn't an area for them to play ball games etc away from pitches.|Lastly recommend Wookey Hole for a Day out 10 percent discount through Bucklegrove site, was good value for money for our grand children, kept them entertained for the whole day, lots of different things to do. Also the lido at Street, excellent on a very hot day, good splash pool...
