Ederline Estate, nestled away near the small village of Ford - is a magical place. Have just returned from a week there - staying at South Lodge, a seemingly small cottage - but Tardis like when you get inside - perfect for a couple or 3 persons. Heating in all rooms - underfloor heating in the bathroom, and a very efficient woodburner, with practice you can fine tune this to throw out tons of heat and make one log last for 2 hours. All amenities are provided, but after your first basket of logs is gone then you need to brush up on your axework - all good fun and part of the experience, the logs are cut and ready - just needing spliting down to size. The Estate is very much a working Estate - but you wont be hassled by farm machinery all day, the odd sound of a quad bike as farmhand Mike sets off checking on the livestock is about all you will notice, sheep abound, some cattle too - and it's all very tranquil. South Lodge overlooks Loch Ederline - a place for Pike and Perch and bankside walks amongst the sheep. There are Lochs in the hills behind the Estate for the more adventurous, and those looking for fly fishing for trout, a 4x4 is essential to reach the first 3 or 4, then you need to walk or cycle, but a magnificent view from up there, it snowed during our visit and this just made it even better. Mike the farmhand was a fount of knowledge, pointing us to the route to the hill loch's, and where deer might be seen on the estate at dusk, even finding out where a local herd of Highland Cattle had just calved so we could go and see them and their calves. Also - if you want to get really close to a Highland cow or 3 - head off up the road to Arduaine Garden, a National trust gardens, there is a field next to the cafe there with 3 who sit nicely by the fence so you can have your picture taken with them. Willa and Angus are your hosts, a friendly couple, they will say hi -and you can ask them anything - and they wont intrude on your holiday at all. Ederline is ideal as a central hub for local trips - the Isles of Arran, Jura, Mull and Islay not too far away, plenty of distilleries around for those who partake of a tipple, and the likes of Inverary, Oban, Campbeltown and other local towns are all within easy driving distance. Remember to make time to enjoy the Estate too though! All in all we loved the place - and I am already plotting my next visit there, highly...
Read moreThis property is wonderfully appointed, spotlessly clean, and very peaceful. The cottage has plenty of space and everything needed for a comfortable stay. It is private and at the same time the hosts are on hand to help if needed. Willa and Angus made our stay incredibly pleasant, suggesting nearby things to see and do and renting rowboats and kayaks for us to use. The property has lots of interesting walks and ruins and there are many archaeological attractions nearby, which we loved. We took a day trip to Mull and Iona from the property and also explored Kilmartin's Temple Wood, Dunad Fort, went crabbing at Ardfern (with Angus's expert advice we were successful!), and spent a day in Crinan walking and watching the yachts. We had plenty of long walks around the property too and loved watching the sheep and cows. I highly recommend this cottage and hope to return someday! It was a truly...
Read moreSix of us came from London and the US for a week's stay and I can say without hesitation that Finchairn farmhouse far exceeded our expectations. The house was lovely, the views spectacular and the owners had paid attention to every detail. I was delighted to be able to draw sheep and paint watercolors perched on the windowseat in my light and airy bedroom. The living room with its fireplace was cosy and comfortable for us all to gather, bathrooms all immaculate and the kitchen and dining rooms all spacious and perfect for group gatherings and the walks all around the property were beautiful. I could have stayed for a month quite happily. We hated to leave! Here is the view from...
