Myself and my Son stay for a short break at the Embleton Spa Hotel 20th June in the Skiddaw apartment 2 nights before writing this review I did contact the Manager Ali and also did speak with him on certain subjects while I was at the Embleton I don't like writing a negative review so its taken me a lot to write this review.
Small things first once in the apartment I wanted to make a cup of tea no cups spoons I located them all in the dishwasher dirty no problem I put the dish washer on and cleaned them but not what I accepted to do the bathrooms where very clean floors in kitchen and lounge where ok but not great overall apartment was clean pillows amazing bedding ok towels very big and nice. Had a lovely terrace with amazing view but sadly felt like I was sat in the carpark as carpark was situated right next to the terrace our terrace also the wooden furniture was not clean bird pooh and cobwebs and the terrace had rather a lot of weeds and needed sweeping.
Sadly the mattress I slept on was very bad this was the start of things the springs had popped right across the bed I never slept all night and had pain in my back in the morning I went to the reception desk at 8am as soon as staff arrived to report the bed also sadly with heat right in front of the French windows was a wasp so having an old dog this was cause for concern as wasps were coming inside the apartment and sadly they were darting about totally understand nature and hotel can't be in control of this but I asked if they could supply fan's as it was so hot so we could close windows to lounge area but was told they had none and handed fly killer and offered a bottle of wine fly killer is not good for pets I drank the wine I needed it..
Went out for the day on return I asked the receptionist if Ali the Manager had checked the bed about the popped spring her reply well it's the Princess and the Pea story she then noticed my face was fixed at her and said to me only joking sadly not the best joke when you had no sleep and also been chased by wasps she then said Ali had checked it and I was correct spring had popped and he had order new mattress arriving the next day but could offer me a room upstairs to sleep in not great when I had come with my Son and had to sleep in separate place and had to leave my old dog as she could not walk up the stairs but I took the offer as could not sleep on that mattress Ali also came later that evening when wasps had calmed down to spray the nest.
I had booked our 2 day stay for my Sons birthday directly with the Hotel then comes the next part to this and on my day of departing I went to the reception to pay the room bill £462.20 to find they had already help themselves and took the money from my card without asking me I was paying by cash and was very upset that they had done this they quickly refunded the money still not got it back yet when I checked my bank they took the money from my account the day we arrived very bad they admitted this mistake and said they thought I had booked with booking.com they were Wrong up to now 6 days of having my money so can't see it coming back into my account till Monday now.
I did write to the Hotel when returning home as I was so upset the Manager Ali did phone me and offered me one night free room if I wished to return after thinking about this I wont return I wrote to him about refunding me a one night stay still waiting for reply on this several days later as I live in York long way to travel one night and to be honest for the amount I paid I truly don't think it was worth it we ate in the hotel both nights food was just ok nothing outstanding views amazing but for the money I feel the hotel is little run down some staff nice some never...
Read moreAn interesting stay at the Embleton hotel overnight. Here is my summary
The hotel has a magnificent entrance but the inside feels aged and run down. We stayed in the Windermere suite. The bathrooms were foisty (particularly the downstairs one as there is no window or fan so this needs addressed). The apartment was nice but the stained sofa, scuff marks and general wear and tear lets it down. The ceiling windows let in lots of natural light which is great but the one directly of the bed could easily have a blind with it to allow guests to have a lie in. The balcony is covered in moss. I was going to do a pictures online of the Windermere suite vs reality but a quick pressure wash and the owners could get this sorted..
The swimming facility was like stepping back in time 25 years. It felt run down, dirty in places (especially the spa and sauna areas). The “changes” logo needs an update to something modern. A positive was the pool temperature was very warm which my toddler loved! This is without doubt a predominant swim school pool rather than a pool designed for hotel guests. i imagine it is very expensive to heat so the hotel offsets some of the costs by plenty of school bookings. I predict it still runs at a loss. Again , the pictures of the pool online are very different to reality. The hotel should really sell it for what it is rather than trick people.
The restaurant is definitely the best thing going for this hotel. The food was delicious at dinner and breakfast. I notice they hire a lot of young people (probably to give them minimum wage and reduce costs). Sadly, this meant a few touches of hospitality were missing. When we came down for breakfast, the atmosphere felt frosty. A simple “how was your sleep last night?” from staff or some other pleasantries would go along way! Also, please dont serve a beer in a cider glass. I know it’s not a big deal, but it is the little things!
I know this hotel claims to be a 4 star hotel. However, this is definitely a 3 star hotel. I use They should own this, lower the prices by £50 a night, clean the rooms and facilities well, and I am sure they...
Read moreNice hotel with good wifi and pool. Great little pool which was right next to our room. There was an adjacent gym that you had to pay extra for. The pool was almost always empty and was just big enough to do lengths. The water was heated and very comfortable - not sure why but it felt like the best I've ever swum in so maybe they used some kind of special salts or else the temperature was just right. Our room (Windermere) was enormous - the upstairs had a double bed with two single beds opposite it. Downstairs was a kitchen containing a dishwasher, an oven, and I think a washing machine (not sure as we didn't need to use that as we ate in the hotel). It was an ideal room for a family and we must have been upgraded to it because we only paid for a double room. Downstairs with the kitchen was a front room with a big settee and a large television. Me and my partner didn't like the stairs much as there were no banisters to hold onto so going down them in the middle of the night could be scary. The staff of the hotel were very kind and helpful. The restaurant food was good. The views of the countryside were great with hills in the distance. Very dog friendly. Free cake and coffee when we arrived which was a lovely welcoming touch. The countryside just by the hotel is beautiful and well worth walking along the lane through, as long as you can navigate your way safely across the main road which can be busy. For the money this three star hotel is superb. We had a great time there and would definitely go back if we were wanted to stay in...
