Unfortunately this accommodation didn’t quite live up to the advertised 4-Star expectation.
I stayed here for two nights during a recreational visit. I chose this hotel because it looked like a quality accommodation when presented on booking sites.
My room was in the ‘Garden Wing’ which sounded great, but due to a lack of any space resembling a garden and with full front exposure to the motorway it left questions open. Entering the wing felt a lot like something out of an old horror movie: Odd smells and long, dark, outdated corridors. The room itself was dark with only a dim light over the entrance and two bedside lamps, one of which had a faulty switch adding to the horror movie ambience. It also smelled quite ordinary. The bed provided one pillow per person, an old ‘decorative’ pillow and an even more worn ‘throw’ (at this point I was trying to find the advertised 4 stars). The bathroom was equipped with one bar of soap and some body wash which sat in a half empty pump bottle on the side of the tub. No hand towels, no shampoo, no conditioner… after a thorough search I did find some coffee and tea making facilities hidden in the cupboard which was nice. The view was the worst. The room was on ground level right next to the entrance to the wing which meant everyone coming and going walked straight towards/past my window. There were no privacy curtains, just a set of thick curtains to block the light. This meant the only option for some privacy was to darken the room completely, relying on the couple of dim lights provided, although there was still perfectly useable daylight outside. As a 4 star hotel describing itself as a ‘county house retreat encircled by gardens’ I would assign this room for storage, not to house guests.
Maybe it’s just the Garden Wing which presents itself negatively and the rooms in the main ‘Manor’ are of higher quality, but the facilities I experienced felt very outdated.
Location - The hotel is surrounded by main roads on 3 sides which makes it a lot less tranquil than it looks on photos. On an upside it is very close to the Kelpies / Falkirk Wheel and other attractions in the area.
The staff were very lovely and breakfast was good although the buffet must have been raided by guests on the first morning because it was very differently stocked each day.
Overall I would not...
Read moreBRIDES AND GROOMS BEWARE! My partner and I had our wedding booked for June 2016 we had originally booked with June who was absolutely amazing, having been a wedding coordinator myself for many years we wanted someone who we knew would take charge and get the job done, unfortunately June left the company after many years of service and Mr Smith & Mr Macdonald from Macdonald Hotels who both own the hotel failed to be loyal and appreciate their employees. The new manageress (oh yes because they got rid of Helen the previous manageress as well) Sue and the new event coordinator James have done nothing but lose notes (mine in particular) and try to scam brides by adding last minute charges on to their bills with things like projector screens etc. which were previously agreed by the former event coordinator June... Unfortunately for the Hotel a lot of the brides network with each other as a few of us meet at one of the hotels wedding fairs and the hotel should not get away with this! I personally know that June wrote everything down for our wedding all the requests and agreements made where done in person and yet the hotel denies the existence of these notes, and now that we have lost confidence in the hotels ability to carry out our wishes for our wedding we have cancelled with enough time to just lose our deposit which was also agreed with June that it would be £170 low deposit but now that she is gone they are trying to scam us of £500! I am still to hear from Sue regarding when we will get our money back and what the amount will be and when I call the hotel Sue avoids my call and their so called accounts department is never there... If you have your wedding booked for next year and are experiencing these problems then GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN! message me and I can provide you with more info… be informed brides and groom before you make a decision...
Read moreI paid under £100 midweek for an Executive Double Room on B&B which I though decent value. Having a look around the hotel, my guess is there's a number of rooms in the original building plus many more in the modern 'Garden Wing' to the rear; this perhaps explains the different experiences of guests.||My room (103) in the original building had a lovely high ceiling, desk, wardrobe and comfortable easy chairs. The furniture looks Edwardian era but is all new, of course. Everything was clean, as was the en-suite. However, the plumbing needs a serious look - I never achieved more than a just-tepid shower after a lot of gurgling from the hot tap. When I mentioned this at reception, they were surprised I hadn't been warned. Work needed here!||Everything else was fine, friendly staff, decent Belhaven at the bar and no quibbles when I asked for a jug of milk for teas and coffee in the room. A quick look around the room found bath-robe and slippers, safe, hair-dryer etc. as expected and complementary bottles of water.||The WiFi wasn't blazing fast but OK for a Zoom call and streaming YouTube. My room faced the main road and the windows are single glazed casement which did rattle once or twice in the wind. However, there are heavy curtains to deal with any draft.||As other reviewers have pointed out the hotel has been encircled by developments so don't come expecting panoramic views of the countryside. There's the M9 on one side and an Asda warhouse on the other.||Breakfast was really nice with a good selection of Continental options plus a range of cooked food including the homely bacon bap which was an welcome change from a full Scottish. Dinner is served in the seperate Cook's Bar & Kitchen.||With the exception of the erratic plumbing I was quite content with...
