A very welcome retreat after completing my Land's End to John O'Groats cycle.
An unassuming exterior hid a warm welcome from my host, Gordon. Gordon seemed to be very familiar with cyclists and was happy for me to wheel my bike into the house and prop it up in the hallway. He then immediately offered to give me a lift back down the road to the hotel for an evening meal if I wanted one.
The guest room was spacious, warm, clean and tidy. The shower was in a room next door. It provided a veritable gush of hot water that instantly refreshed me after my 140 mile push to get to the finish from near Aviemore. The bed was very comfortable and the location extremely quiet - no riotous parties from the sheep in the field opposite.
I indulged in a decadent and leisurely Full Scottish breakfast which was superb.
Gordon, ever the attentive host, then offered to take me to Duncansby Head, the true furthest North East point on mainland UK. Read moreMy sister and I had travelled from the south coast to john o groats by bus, using our bus passes (two oldies!!) Hugging the coast roads all the way up, although not able to use our passes in scotland. .....anyway.......the Hamnavoe b and b was our very last stop and it was excellent . The lady bus driver on our 30th bus....stopped outside to drop us off! It was clean comfy and homley. Our lovley host even took us to the local restaurant for our evening meal. He took us to the 'signpost ' for the obligatory photos , and the next morning, after a very comfy nights sleep, and a breakfast of cereal ,meats ,cheese , toast, lovley, he took us to catch our bus back to inverness to start our long journey home. Read moreFirst and last time! Friendly owner greeted us on arrival. From there on it went downhill. No lock on bedroom door which I felt uneasy about since there was a door adjacent to our room and a shared bathroom. We put a chair up against the door. There were hairs in the bathroom sink and a dirty hand towel. Outside our bedroom window could have done with tidying up. The owners had music playing loudly until 11pm. You could hear it over the t.v. both guests and owners were speaking loudly outside our room until late. We were that annoyed we tried to arrange alternate accommodation while we were there. In the morning we left without breakfast before others got up....
