We booked Hazlewood because it was one of the only Castle estates that could accommodate our rather larger party (6 people). We got two rooms. The Honeysuckle room has enough space for 4 smaller people and a child. We have taller men in our group (my husband and father in law) along with my 7yo so it worked well. There is a master bedroom with king bed and a sitting room that has a pull out sofa bed and they put a cot as well in the room for my child. So it worked well. Amazing view of the countryside in this room as well. Our in-laws stayed in Hibiscus which they thought was quite nice and had a view of the courtyard.
Getting there - so there's no official transport, you need to prebook a taxi, uber or other form of transportation to the hotel from Leeds (where we came in from). It's an easy 30 min ride - we did Uber. When you return the hotel has several taxi services you can call and prearrange transport back to whereever you need to go. Uber doesn't do 'pre-arranged' pick ups, just day-of.
The grounds are beautiful - they have some lovely walkways - paved, graveled and wood chips. They have roaming peacocks so if you bring pets, leash them. They have a lounge and restaurant. The lounge is open all day and I believe can start serving (tea/coffee etc if you just ask) around 10am. The Castle feels like an estate you'd see out of Bridgerton (seriously, Netflix it). It's quaint with a few sitting rooms, you can order drinks (or food) from the lounge and sit in any of the other rooms if the lounge is full or you just like the ambiance in any of the other sitting rooms. They have an onsite amphitheater and adventure grounds that hosts Live Today events like archery, ax throwing, indoor/outdoor escape rooms, soccer type games etc... minimum age is usually 8yo but they took our 7yo just fine - long as an adult is participating too. Indoor/outdoor seating for eating/beverages. Lovely, atmosphere, great countryside views everywhere.
Rooms - Honeysuckle is where we stayed, plenty of space for the 4 of us, water pressure a bit light in the bathroom but water temperature was consistent once you got it running for a bit. Good sized bathroom, fan is a bit loud but you tune it out pretty easily. No screens on the windows so if you have them open for air - flying bugs may also enter but it's second floor, so it's not too bad. In the summer a bit warm so do keep the windows open the curtains pulled away from the window so you can get some air at night.
Food - Lounge food is 'lighter' fare but you I felt like you could get a decent lunch there for sure they have lighter and 'fuller' options on the menu. Vavasour restaurant is really nice, it's where breakfast buffet is as well as a more formal dinnner - smaller venue so be sure to reserve so they know how many in your party and what time to expect you.
Really great afternoon tea, I'd recommend it!
I didn't see any children at the Castle while we were here and I was a bit skeptical on it's child-friendliness but I was so pleasantly surprised. My 7yo had a blast with the Live Today events and wandering around the grounds. They have a couple trees dolled up as gnome residences (or fairy residences) which was fun to find. They have a children's menu for the lounge and Vavasour - just make sure to ask for it.
Overall really pleased with our stay, so relaxing - very...
Read moreMy mother was born in Hazlewood Castle and has just turned 80 so we spent the night there to celebrate her birthday. The staff were fantastic from the phone call about making a booking to the waiters all were a credit to Hazlewood, They were all very helpful, polite, respectful and well mannered and made our stay pleasurable.|Ella was really helpful nothing was too much trouble, Carly was a star very welcoming and knowledgeable, Kash was friendly polite and very respectful he seemed to do all manor of jobs too! Andy was comical polite and friendly and nothing was a hassle for any of them.|The Castle itself is lovely and seeped in history some of which is my mothers birth!|We stayed in Honeysuckle and though its nice room its a bit out dated and in need of a touch up, I did expect it to be a bit more stylish for the price but it was very spacious. Unfortunately the TV in the bedroom didn't work.|It had a fabulous view to the front and to the side was where the cemetery is, It was relatively clean too.|The bed was comfy the linen lovely but the pillows were a tad thin for my liking.|The coffee in the room was very nice and so was the hot chocolate!|The restaurant could have done with a bit more lighting in my opinion as I was sat in the corner with not much light and under the speaker which was not ideal as I could hardly hear my mother.|The food was ok I had a pizza the base was nice but the cheese left the crust a good inch and a half from the edge and the base was thin and crispy but a bit too crispy! The tomato was not to my taste but that is a personal preference, My mother had Cumberland sausage mashed potatoes and gravy of which she enjoyed.|The breakfast was very nice I enjoyed it and left with a full belly! |The grounds are nice and well maintained it was nice to sit on the bench and take in the view.|Overall it was a nice treat for my mothers birthday.|This is a card only venue which stumped us a bit totally my fault for not looking at the details so make sure you...
Read moreThis is a tricky review to write. My family and I attended a booked Christmas lunch on Sunday 10th Dec 2023. Our expectations were high, after all, this is a 4-star hotel. The lunch was served in the bar rather than in the restaurant. But we were a little surprised to find we were given a table where two of the seats were armchairs, which were rather low for eating from the table. Ok we thought, let's go with this rather than asking to be moved. However, whilst the bar room was grand in a 1990s way, it lacked any atmosphere, (as opposed to other rooms in the building) and the table, whilst set for our meal, didn't even have a table cloth. Overall, the food was passable, but felt more like a discount Sunday meal at a pub, than a special Christmas lunch. No table dressings or crackers were anywhere in sight, despite the meal being booked via their Events Team. One of our party was also served food which was cold. She wouldn't let us raise this with the serving staff to correct it, as she was so fed by then. We had to wait a VERY long time between courses. And I do mean a VERY long time. Our lunch was booked for 1pm and we didn't finish the three courses until around 5pm. By then we were all fed up of the interminable waiting and just wanted to go home. The serving staff were very young and obviously rather inexperienced. For a 4-star hotel, there was no attention to detail at all. (Someone who had cheese was served a spoon and fork to eat it with, another example was having to push staff in order to get drinks and also freezing cold pats of butter being served). You do expect better of a 4-star hotel and wonder regarding the hefty service charge which was added to our bill. The staff on reception were lovely, but I do feel all in all, that the hotel needs to up it's game. Look at that attention to detail which is expected of a hotel at your level @Hazlewood Castle! Needless to say, we won't be...
