This was our second visit to Kaoglen, and we returned since we'd enjoyed the first visit so much (we'd stayed in one of the lodges). It's in a beautiful location, the accommodation is mostly excellent, and the hot tubs are perfect to relax in. The restaurant is also quite good, though only open on certain days of the week. It's not really a hotel, since there is no reception or onsite staff. We'd booked Blossom suite in the main lodge building for this visit, and were very happy with our first impressions. The suite is tastefully decorated, with a wet room and separate kitchen. There is a small decking area out the back with a hot tub. The only issue was that the prosecco and chocolates we had ordered (it was the day before Valentine's) were not in the room (there was also no welcome booklet, so no instructions for the hot tub, cooker, etc.). We weren't particularly bothered as we'd brought plenty of provisions with us, but it was slightly disappointing. As we relaxed in the hot tub we sent a FB message to the team advising them of the omissions (this was the recommended way of getting in touch with them as per our booking confirmation). We didn't get a response, which was also disappointing. We are in the hospitality business ourselves and would never dream of ignoring guests' messages. In the morning we noticed a mobile contact number on the door of the "reception" area, and sent a message regarding the missing prosecco and chocolates. Within a few minutes we got a very apologetic response by text from the manager, who delivered the missing items himself. We thought the matter was settled amicably until after we had returned home on the following day, when out of the blue we received a response to our original (!) FB message. This message claimed that (1) our welcome booklet had been found in an adjacent lodge in which our "friends" were staying (we have never met any of the other guests!) (2) they had CCTV footage of our prosecco and chocolates being placed in our "lodge"! Now, whatever you think of your guests (and I think we were actually model ones) you do not accuse them of lying without very good evidence indeed. We responded to say that we didn't appreciate the tone of the message, and refuting their suggestions. Amazingly we have heard nothing back, let alone an apology, which can only suggest that the owners were either having a very bad day and are very forgetful, or else don't care much about customer service. It's a great shame, as we love the place, and would happily return, though we may well be blacklisted after posting...
Read moreStayed for 3 nights in the Fawn Pod with 2 dogs. The area is GORGEOUS, honestly beautiful, with perfect walks on the doorstep. So so peaceful and lots of wildlife to observe. We could see the site is being developed/improved, from new lodges & pods being added, to new trees and landscaping. All being done in a sensitive way that will only add to its charm! that said, We were not at all disrupted by the ongoing improvements. The whole place was tranquil and we hardly saw anyone.
The fawn pod is perfect for a couple. Our dogs are small and clingy, but I’d say maybe size up accommodation if you have large breeds. It would be cosy to say the least 😂.
The kitchen area has all you need really, crockery, glassware, cutlery, utensils, pots & pans. A 2 burner hob, oven, small fridge/freezer, microwave, kettle, and sink. A small welcome tray of tea bags ect was provided, along with some washing up liquid, bin bags, a tea towel & cloths. Even a mini torch & first aid kit. You will need to remember bits like kitchen roll, salt/pepper, oil, and sauce if you want it.
The living area is all open plan, there’s a little 2 seater sofa, coffee table, double bed with bedside tables & lamps, and a bistro style table & chairs. There is a TV also. The bed was very comfortable and the radiator heated up the space well. There are only 3 small drawers in each bedside, and 1 rack you could hang a couple coat hangers from (but no additional hangers), there’s nowhere else to hang things or store your stuff, so pack accordingly. We were happy leaving stuff in our suitcase.
The bathroom is compact. Specifically the sink. But again, has all you need and the shower was actually bigger than I expected. It could do with a shower mat, it’s a bit slippy in there! Take some extra loo roll with you. There was some mini shower gel & soap provided. A bath & hand towel each, plus bath mat.
We added on robes, chocolates, and bubbly which were ready in the room, complete with rose petals, on our arrival. Good quality and a nice touch as celebrating my birthday.
We didn’t get to try the restaurant this time.
Overall the whole place was lovely, clean, and everyone we did come across was friendly. Really good value for the price I think! We would definitely stay again! Thanks for...
Read moreKaoglen Lodge was everything we hoped for and more. We stayed in the Grand Suite, which was ideal for parents and one child (or would be perfect for two couples). It was spacious, spotlessly clean, and beautifully finished with Norwegian wood, giving it a cosy but stylish feel.
After long days exploring, coming back to the lodge was a highlight in itself. The hot tub overlooking the valley was the perfect way to relax, and the amazing fireplace made the evenings feel extra special. Sitting in front of the fire with a scotch or vino in hand while looking out over the Highlands—it’s the kind of place that makes you slow down and appreciate the moment.
The kitchen was equipped enough, making it easy to cook meals when we wanted, and the beds were incredibly comfortable, ensuring a great night’s sleep. Everything was set up for a stress-free stay, and the sense of privacy and peace made it even better. There’s also a reasonably priced village shop just five minutes away, which has everything needed to cook great meals—including a good selection of local meat and fresh vegetables.
Matthew and his team were excellent hosts, friendly, welcoming, and always on hand if needed. The whole place was immaculately clean, and for the space, comfort, and location, it felt very reasonably priced.
Top Tip: If you’re staying in the Grand Suite (the only lodge with a fire), pick up some logs and firelighters from the village shop before you arrive, as they’re not sold on site. A crackling fire on your first night just adds to the relaxing atmosphere the Grand Suite invokes.
We enjoyed it so much that we extended our stay by two nights and honestly, we’d have stayed even longer if we could. If you’re looking for a place to escape, recharge, and enjoy the beauty of the Highlands in...
