We booked the helicopter for the last night of a 10 day trip to do the NC500 in a hired campervan and I was very keen to experience it as I used to work on Sea King's in the RAF. It was very hard to book as the website would not let me book the helicopter, so I tried to call the site. They never answer the phone!! Eventually they called me back and I booked it. £170 seemed like alot for one night but we decided to go for it and then watched the conversion on George Clarkes Amazing Spaces. It looked amazing! Unfortunately while we were on our trip our van broke down and I had to contact the host to let him know that we might not be able to make it. Once again it was hard to make contact but he eventually picked up! We managed to arrange a hire car and we eventually arrived at the site at 10pm and we were greeted by Paul. He handed me a key and that was it?! We were not shown to the accommodation and having found out how to get in, it took us a while to find the light switches and the first thing we noticed was how cold it was inside? We worked out how to turn the heater on and used the microwave to heat up a very late dinner! There were no wine glasses so we used the only two glasses that were tall tumblers?! The inside of the helicopter looked dirty and the blind in the bathroom was mouldy. The white silicone behind the sink had black mould and there was no bin in the kitchen area? We decided to get some sleep and the bedding was under the sofa bed in a bag. We had to put the duvet cover on and the pillowcases and the bed was sort of comfortable but it is just soft sponge with a grey rubber cover. The next morning I had a good look around in daylight and the helicopter is looking unloved and very tired. It is going green and there was moss growing on the flotation bag cover close to the main steps. The steps were slippery as the non slip paint has long since gone and the tail wheel tyre is flat. The BBQ was falling to bits (the handle for the lid was underneath) and when I opened it there were old coals in water and old fat inside the lid! The firepit was full of unburnt charred logs and rubbish. We had arranged a late check out but we had a coffee and left. The rest of the site looked alright, but there is a Twin Pioneer opposite the helicopter that has been fenced off and behind it a pile of rubbish? Looks like another conversion has been started but abandoned? There is also a lifeboat that is sat in a hole full of water, and this is covered in green moss and looking like it has also been abandoned?! That end of the site looks like a scrapyard! So basically we paid £170 for a night of Luxury Glamping and what we got was a very tired and cold helicopter that had no towels, no teatowel, no rubbish bin and a pullout sofabed! What an absolutely dissapointing experience and a complete rip-off!!!! £170 in Northumberland would get me one night in a luxury hotel with breakfast! The pictures on the website bear absolutely no resemblance to what it actually is and the conversion that was aired on TV is nothing like the real thing now!! I emailed Mains Farm to complain about the appalling experience and to date I have heard nothing back?!! DO NOT waste your hard earned money on the...
Read moreI booked to stay in the helicopter for my husband's birthday as he loves flying. It was fun to stay in a helicopter, it was a novelty and the helicopter has been done up well (we particularly liked the disco lights in the tail), but apart from that we were quite disappointed.
I received an email prior to arrival about COVID check in procedures that said someone would meet us in the car park. Nobody did, even though the guy in reception could quite clearly see us waiting in our car in the car park, so I had to go into reception, which increases risk for both me and other people using reception and was presumably what meeting in the car park was supposed to avoid. From another recent review it seems we weren't the only ones for whom check in was not as advertised.
The email prior to arrival also said that we could use the firepit but were required to buy wood from reception, which we should order in advance. I emailed to ask about this but didn't get a reply. The email also said we should make contact to give our arrival time in advance, which I did, but got no reply to this either - usually B&Bs etc send a friendly "see you then" acknowledgement. Communication was also slow during the booking process (I booked before COVID).
When we arrived we found that as well as all guidebooks (which we were told about in advance), all decor and soft furnishings had also been removed from the helicopter, so it looked bare inside and not nice like in the pictures. I understand this will have been for COVID reasons, but I don't think it was necessary to remove absolutely everything including things like plants, and it would have been nice if some things that clearly didn't pose a risk (e.g. pictures on the walls) could have been put in instead. Or perhaps a discounted price could have been offered given that it wasn't the experience that was expected at the time of booking.
As another recent TripAdvisor review mentions, there was no tea, coffee or sugar. I would expect these to be provided for £170 a night, or at the very least be told that we needed to bring our own. There also were not enough pillows.
We were given a lot of instructions on what we had to do (strip the beds, clean the helicopter, empty the rubbish, read ALL the info on the app (which wasn't necessary)), but not made to feel welcome or communicated with as we should have been, and I left feeling I had spent far too much money on what turned out to be an...
Read moreGreat place to stay with the whole family. Affordable, clean and has a communal kitchen area, toilets and showers. We had a basic pod/cabin with only beds and a little table for food with a little fridge and kettle. Not the youngest of pods, but still in ok condition, clean and tidy. Every pod in our area had a little fireplace as well, made out of an old truck rim (this place likes to repurpose them). There is also an old helicopter, that has been converted to a cabin, that you can rent, I think. Also has a rim in between the rotor blades welded in, the real mechanics of the rotor were probably still useful for somebody else, haha. For 1pound, you can buy some marsh mellows and firewood for the fireplace for 6pound. Fireplaces also have a grill for doing your basic BBQ. Staff is helpful...
