The Mayen Estate is a special holiday destination. A very well-maintained estate around a beautiful walled garden; there is a great deal to enjoy at Mayen, even without leaving to visit the very many attractions and destinations in the region. On the estate, we saw hares, several magnificent herons in flight, red squirrels and deer. The river Deveron runs through the estate, so the riverside walks are lovely and there is freedom to roam around.
The standard of communication ahead of arrival is excellent and it's clear that the owners are genuinely motivated to give their guests the best possible experience. We took up many of their well-researched suggestions and found them to be very helpful.
We stayed in Bailies cottage and received a very warm welcome on arrival from one of the estate hosts. As other reviewers have said, it was lovely to be given fresh eggs from the estate hens and we even arrived back from an outing one day to find a large tray of fresh vegetables. The hot tub was great and, as other reviewers have said, heated by a wood stove. Within an hour of the estate are many highland and Speyside distilleries for whisky enthusiasts, the Cairngorms, and the Banffshire coast offers a great opportunity to tour through seaside villages from which we were able to see dolphins passing by along the coast.

Read moreWe have just had a wonderful stay in Butlers Cottage on the estate, the cottage is very cosy, the bed and pillows are so comfortable we found it hard to get out. We were concerned about how to use/keep the hot tub warm but we shouldn't have worried. It's really easy to use and heats up from cold in a couple of hours (unlike our electric one at home which takes 24 hrs). It's a great system and endless logs are a real treat. It was even still hot the following morning, so we went in again before our complimentary fresh eggs. One morning we walked around the grounds including the walled garden, beautifully kept and very interesting - all the estate is very impressive and the walk to the river delightful even in November weather. Definitely recommended as a very relaxing place to stay...
Read moreWe stayed in the Guardhouse from 12 - 16 Sep 2022. our arrival and introduction to the accommodation and walled garden was carried out by a very pleasant member of staff who answered all our questions and offered some advice on local places to visit. the accommodation was superb, and they really did think of everything, the hot tub and outdoor kitchen / dining area complete with BBQ, pizza oven was fully equipped or great outdoor entertaining. The grounds of the estate and local area is spectacular, and the staff have a fantastic way of allowing you complete freedom and privacy whilst remaining discreetly in the background and available if you need them. we really felt at home on the estate and in the guardhouse and will defiantly be returning in the future.
