Well, just come back from yet another visit - we've been coming every year now for years for a family reunion, and have just booked it again for my cousin's fortieth wedding anniversary next year, which will give us a chance to try out the caterers! It's such a comfortable and welcoming house, and everything is very high end. Anna, the owner, is really helpful and a fantastic little welcome pack is always there when we arrive, together with very classy toiletries in all of the bathrooms. A weekend at Monnington is something that all the family looks forward to, and as all of the bedrooms including in the cottage are really comfortable and luxurious, nobody needs to feel they got the short straw. The kitchen is wonderful and really well equipped which gives the cooks in the family great joy! And we always all enjoy the open fires and the beautiful surrounding countryside - perfect for autumn walks. Update from our third visit (already booked again for next year!). Still just as lovely and we all enjoyed ourselves so much. Just such a pleasure to stay in a house which is so comfortable and friendly and feels so relaxed. Beautifully warm and so well equipped. The first two years we were here we went into Hay on Wye for Saturday and to a pub for lunch on Sunday, but this time it seemed a shame to leave the house. So we went for a big walk on Saturday - took the Wye Valley trail through the Bulmers' cider orchards and then looped around Garnons Hill and back - really gorgeous scenery, fantastic walking. On Sunday we cooked a big lunch in the lovely kitchen while everyone lounged around reading the papers in the dining room and chatting or else slumped by the fire waiting to eat, punctuated by a lively game of football in the field for the kids - it was just wonderful! Really can't recommend this too highly - it really is the perfect house to visit. And the owners are very kind and helpful - they are developing a new property across the garden which will provide overflow for large parties or a more private property for smaller groups, which suits us very well. Our large family is expanding as the younger generation partner up, and they all want to come along, so it's great to find a property where everyone can have a bed and nobody gets a raw deal, since all of the rooms are equally comfortable and well-appointed. This is our second visit - we loved it the first time, loved it even more the second! It's a big house which doesn't feel big - loads of space for everyone, with lots of places for people to sit and chat comfortably, but at the same time we didn't feel that we were rattling around separate to one another. One of the nicest things is that this house really does feel like a home. Beautiful furnishings, bookshelves stuffed with books everywhere, well-chosen paintings and prints in every room, it feels like staying with a very kind and well-off relative with a lovely house! We're a big family party celebrating a birthday, which was easy given the gorgeous dining area and two wonderful sitting rooms, one "formal" which was fantastic for pre-dinner drinks, and one comfy one for slobbing with the papers or watching tv. Perfect for kids and adults alike! All the bedrooms are very well appointed and comfortable, with no-one getting a raw deal. Beds are fantastic - we all commented on how well we slept. We also took the cottage which is a perfect little hideaway - our twenty-somethings slept there so they could lie in without being disturbed by small people shrieking with excitement as they ran around downstairs :-) As it was winter we didn't use the garden, but it looks lovely, and there are some great walks in the area. We really enjoyed a visit to Hay-on-Wye, and had a lovely lunch at the Portway Inn, twenty minutes' walk from the house. Finally, the owners are a pleasure to deal with and made us feel very welcome, which is not always the case with holiday lets. In short, we liked it so much we've already booked it...
Read moreWe stayed at Monnington House as part of our Golden Wedding Anniversary celebrations. We could not have chosen a better home for a week. There were 3 generations making up our party of 10 and the house with its 6 bedrooms was an ideal configuration to give all of us our own private space when a quiet retreat was needed. The generously sized bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, were beautifully decorated and furnished. Equally the 3 very comfortable reception "siting rooms" allowed us to spread out but still be with others in the party wether we wanted to join in board games or sit and read - the benefits of such a large house. We had keen cooks with us and all evening meals were prepared in the well equipped kitchen and served to the very long dining table that still allowed jigsaws to lay undisturbed at the far end! Overall the house was beautifully decorated and furnished. We made good use of the 2 games rooms; the pool table in particular was a hit. The couple of minor issues that we had with one of the televisions and a shower were very quickly responded to by Anna and in no way detracted from a wonderful stay. The location was new to us but in our view is an undiscovered delight and deserves a return visit at some stage. Although our visit was in late October we found excellent places to eat and most visitor attractions were still open. Although we have only been home for a short time we have already recommended Monnington House to friends who are planning a family gathering. Thank you Anna for bringing our celebrations to such a...
Read moreWe rented Monnington House for a Monday-Friday slot to host our families from Canada and Australia for a wedding celebration. Situated within reasonable distance to London (depending on traffic), Monnington House is located in the heart of the Wye Valley amongst scenic English countryside while still having quick access to a major centre (Hereford) if needed.
The house is well maintained, fully stocked, and decorated with traditional yet modern country-house accents. Each room has it's own ensuite bathroom, which gives privacy to all occupants. There is plenty of room to come together or have your own personal space, as desired. It was great to have the pool table and ping-pong table where you could have friendly battles!
We hired our own chef for the duration of our stay, which was one of the best decisions, as it allowed our guests to focus on each other, rather than spending all their time cooking and cleaning (we would highly recommend Chef Michael Fishpen from London)!
We had a small wedding ceremony in the yard, which was beautifully landscaped and the perfect backdrop for photo ops. We had bought a book of the Wye Valley walks, and went on an adventure to the local church (well worth the short trip!) and up towards the lookout point west along the Wye Valley walking path, which was a lovely afternoon out.
All in all, our families had a wonderful time and the house was the perfect place to bring them together. We would highly recommend Monnington House, particularly for intimate...
