This was my first ever camping experience with my FiancĆ© and her family and I was buzzing! ||Having drove through Glencoe area maybe 25-30 times in the last few years for work purposes and seen it in all its glory, good and bad, I was up for this!! šŖš»||During the day of Friday, 4th July, I was working out doors before we left to go to camping so was already feeling the effects of a miserable day. ||Drove 2hrs to the Red Squirrel campsite and got checked in, all good, plenty information on the Doās n Donāt, picked our spot close to the toilets etc⦠but rain was constant which was fine. |Met up with family and chilled for a bit in the hope the rain would ease up to erect our tent but it didnāt and time was getn on. ||First we went to see about getting our air mattress pumped up only to discover a leak.. š«£ and our first encounter with Kazz! š Straight away she helped up seal the leak which allowed us to get use of the mattress. š She allowed us to leave the mattress while went to put the tent up. ||We had a tent which hadnāt been used for a while, inexperienced as I am, I now know this was the first alarm bell⦠𫣠|As it was belting down with rain you can imagine spirits were getting tested but I remained positive as this was a new experience for me with my partner who had more. ||So⦠Got the tent up only to find it was leaking like a teabag!!! š³š not goodā¦.. We where deflated more than our punctured mattress at this point.. We had only two options, sleep in the van or head home! It was 8:30pm so didnāt fancy either option⦠We were absolutely drenched! š¤||While we decided what to do we went to collect our mattress, we told Kazz our situation and she quickly sorted us with another tent which had previously been abandoned⦠Superstar š š ||We put that tent up and got changed into dry clothes and settled with family again.. |while we done that, unknown to us Kazz threw a tarp over the tent she gave us just for piece of mind because it was still horrible weather and there was wind forecast during the night. Very much appreciated and a great gesture. š||Next morning, after an ok sleep we went to Fort William and bought a new text and the rest of the weekend went as planned. Looking forward to the next one now. ||My first experience of camping couldnāt have got off to a worse start, honestly, it was stinking but thankfully between Kazz being a Super Hero and my partner being so āCan Doā šŖš» we turned it around and the Red Squirrel campsite will defo be a place I will hold in high regard. Will defo be back. ||All this said, the facilities, the snack bar, the coffee van, reception, the rest of the staff who we watched cleaning and maintaining all contributed to what turned out a great weekend, I know the scenery which is breathtaking and the power of the river flow due to the weather was also stunning! ||For a first timer, I felt this campsite had everything but the most important part for us was the assistance we got⦠Thank You very much Kazz for flipping our stop over from a disaster to a happy...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreRed Squirrel was great and really gives an all round camping experience. It's great for solo travellers and families. My friend and I spent two nights here one in a Campervan the other in a tent. Due to its location, the wind can be heavy and gusty so be prepared. Additionally the ground for camping (again due to location) is incredibly stoney and hard so bring appropriate tent pegs.
The site is rural and aimed primarily at walkers and family groups. The facilities are basic and not the best I've seen while travelling so if you are looking for luxury this place isn't for you so please just book somewhere else.
This site is however perfect for people looking to experience a more traditional camping trip. The site is massive compared to some we've stayed on and there are pitches available for all types of travel from walkers and tents to Motorhomes. I wouldn't attempt to take coaches or bus style campers because...that would just be stupid (look on Google maps and engage brain)
Get there early if you want the best pitches though because they fill quickly. Even though there are lots of pitches located around the site there are plenty of spaced really well and we never at any point felt cramped overlooked or invaded by others moving about the site. Camp fires are allowed (with common sense) and stone fire pits and plentyful around the site and free to use. Pitch up and start camping. The only thing to note is that whilst fresh drinking water is available throughout the site these pitches are not serviced. I didn't see any pitches where you can hook up your camper with a hose and cable (I'm not saying there were none but be prepared to be off grid)
Most pitches are covered by trees with abundance of birds and wildlife clearly content with humans being around. There is a river that runs through the site which is beautiful if you make the effort to wander and find it. Nature walks and trail for all experience are available and Hagrid's Hut (where Harry Potter was filmed) is literally a 10-min walk and easy for kids.
The guy who booked us in (with the grey beard and Aussie hat) was awesome. Definitely gave the right vibes for the site. Polite knowledgeable and totally a joy (not something most campsites have). He also told us, the plentyful drinking water taps available throughout the site are fed from their own freshwater mountain spring from the cliffs beside.
Fantastic views great place....
Ā Ā Ā Read moreGreat campsite and amazing location. However, bring your ear plugs! The 11pm 'absolute silence' rule is not enforced. On the last night of our 3 night stay there was one group next to us who were drinking and very loud and went on until almost 1am. On the other side of us was parked another camper, they decided to start cooking dinner at 10.30pm and then wash up and open and close their doors continuously whilst playing music until 1.30am. When they finished there were still people in some areas of the site who were being very loud, luckily far enough away so they didn't disturb us but they definitely would have disturb others. Either way by this point we were not going to sleep anytime soon. I think I managed to drift off around 2.30am. This was a bank holiday weekend and I get people want to drink and be merry etc but it was very busy that night, too many people in my opinion and we needed to get up early for the next leg of our journey. A drive I had to do with only a few hours sleep. I just don't see the point in having such a rule if it is not enforced. Please do not reply and say it is because it very clearly isn't, that group of lads should have been kicked off site. They were falling over their chairs and shouting at each other. They also had a massive upright spotlight they kept turning on and it was shining right into our camper. At 1.30 am I very nearly drove us off sight but my partner had managed to fall asleep with the aid of a set of ear plugs, something I should have brought, not that I should have had to. Which also reminds me, gone 1am someone was driving around in their vehicle for some reason. It's a shame, as the first night was great! Second night was ok, bit of noise too late but they were done by midnight so not overly bothered. Bit the third night was truly awful. My advice to the owners would be, actually enforce the 11pm silence rule or don't bother and clearly state on your website that anything goes so that people know to avoid it of they value...
