River Cabin: Cosy Eco-Cottage — Hotel in Great Britain

Our stay at River Cabin over the Christmas and New Year period was unfortunately disappointing. While the concept of an eco-friendly retreat is commendable, the property did not meet the expectations set by its listing.

The listing portrays the cabin as a secluded and peaceful retreat, but the reality is quite different. It’s located less than 50 meters from the busy A470, with consistent road noise, and is situated near another holiday let and a small campsite. These details, though not inherently problematic, should have been clearly disclosed as they significantly impact the sense of seclusion advertised.

The cabin itself felt neglected. While not dirty, there was noticeable dust and cobwebs, giving the impression that it isn't maintained to a high standard. The layout was also unexpected based on the photos: the bifold doors lead only to an enclosed porch with a dining area, and the toilet and shower are in separate cubicles detached from the main living space, contributing to a "campsite" vibe rather than a cozy retreat.

We also encountered a major issue with the water. The private spring water supply, while eco-friendly, had a strong, unpleasant odor that made drinking, washing, and cooking uncomfortable. This is an aspect of off-grid living that requires diligent maintenance, which seemed lacking.

Amenities were minimal and somewhat neglected. Cooking utensils were sparse, and cookware was worn. The oven/microwave appliance was inadequate, and there were no thoughtful touches to make us feel welcome—something as simple as a small festive detail during the holiday season would have been appreciated. Additionally, the sofa bed in the bedroom was unusable due to its condition, making the claim that the cabin accommodates four people feel misleading.

On the positive side, the bed was clean and comfortable, and the owners were attentive to our concerns. They did provide a partial refund when we complained, which we appreciated, but it does not change the fact that the property did not meet expectations.

In summary, while the eco-friendly ethos is admirable, the cabin's maintenance, amenities, and advertising fall short. Future guests should be aware of the property's proximity to the road, shared grounds, and the reality of its facilities. Unfortunately, we would not choose to...

The best little cabin ever. It really did feel like home. As soon as you arrive you can feel the pride invested in the cabin and you know you will have a good stay, no matter the weather. What a wonderful little gem. I booked in for a Working Retreat and didn't want to leave. My dog love the space and there are plenty of walks right on your doorstep. The sound of the river at the bottom of the garden was so peaceful and the porch area was a perfect working space. Can't wait...
