UPDATE May 2024 : Since I left my 5* review in Oct/Nov 2023 I have an update and I can only give 3*. We have only used the hotel for their Swim/Lunch package which is £20 per person for one hours use of the pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, followed by lunch from a dedicated menu. The swim element is the same and can be booked for £10 without the lunch. In the New Year, the menu changed and the superb beer battered hake and chips was replaced with a smaller portion of haddock and chips. The beef burger was available but with a £3 surcharge and there was also a steak option with a £5 supplement. Moules and frites were also an option but the portion size varied significantly from visit to visit. More recently the menu has changed again and the small, line caught soggy-battered haddock and chips with peas now attracts a £3 surcharge and the burger does not appear to include chips, according to the menu. The hake (no longer offered) is the 1st photo and the haddock is the 3rd photo. Note that I have inadvertently covered the very small portion of peas up with the small portion of fish and the excellent tartar sauce does not now come automatically. There are other options available such as a baked potato with beans and cheese, served with salad and there are sandwiches available. In our opinion, the standard of the lunch element has dropped significantly and we now only choose the swim element whilst we look around locally for an alternative. It may not just be us as we haven't seen any other regulars that we met there. I would not have objected to a hike in prices rather than a drop in the standards but we now go elsewhere for lunch. UPDATE ENDS. Review from Oct/Nov 2023. My wife and I live locally to this magnificent hotel and we called in for a midweek lunch in November. The hotel is situated within its own grounds with plenty of parking. The grounds are lovely and I would imagine that they are amazing in spring and summer. The hotel overlooks St Austell Bay so there are sea views from many rooms, the restaurant, bar and terrace. The hotel itself is quite imposing with a huge entrance door leading to a large reception. Lots of comfy seating and interesting art work. Lunch is served in an annex which is through the bar area. The staff were professional and attentive throughout, even with regards to quite minor things, and all were a real credit to the standard of the hotel. The menu was varied enough for lunch with vegetarian options. We both went for their fish and chips as the fish was hake, one of my favourites. The meal was well presented and served professionally. The fish was placed on stacked chips and served with ever so slightly crushed petit pois and tartar sauce with a slice of lemon and water cress to garnish. The fish was perfectly cooked with a light, perfect batter. OK, it was a fish and chip lunch but it was done to perfection in every respect. The price was £17.50 and worth every penny. I saw other luncheon dishes which looked equally delicious. I can say the whole experience was so good that we have booked for next week and I have even looked at staying here overnight for future special occasions. A big thank you to all the staff for their excellence in all of their fields and we will see you again soon. Update: Visted the following week and had the fish pie. Superb.

I booked this hotel for our 46th wedding anniversary after seeing the write ups on the quality of the food and hotel. The hotel write up says “wake up to sea views and a hearty breakfast included on both mornings of your stay, tuck into the continental buffet or order cooked items from the menu, will it be full Cornish or eggs Benedict? Our talented chefs will create a three course dinner for you to enjoy in the intimate oak panelled Dakota restaurant also included in one night of your stay expect delicious dishes where local and seasonal ingredients shine” I must point out that this hotel was taken over in September 2024 and I think most of the information on their website is related to the previous owners the delicious food was not forthcoming we had booked that romantic weekend which included rose petals in the room, chocolate bottle of Bubbly & breakfast on both nights with three course dinner on 1st night The breakfast was most disappointing I've never seen such a bland looking full English in all my life as per the photograph and it was all cold and I ordered it with the eggs poached to be on toast so the yoke would seep into the toast and my wife ordered egg Benedict, both our eggs came up solid! The evening meal which again nothing related to previous write ups on the hotel. The main courses on offer were pasta arrabiata, sirloin steak but that was an additional £10, duck with noodles and hoisin sauce, cheeseburger and fish and chips. The duck and noodles came up with a duck leg on top! Whenever I've had that in any other high class restaurants the duck always comes up shredded in the noodles not dumped on the top. The waitress we had who's now gone off to Bali was outstanding, the maitre-d' for breakfast and in general I must say was very poor. While staying you could NOT run up a TAB! Every time we ordered a beer, wine or anything you have to pay at time of ordering. Overall, hotel and grounds were good the bedroom we had was bland in its decoration just to bed a table and a city looking out the window did have a Seaview. I went for swim and Jacuzzi in the pool which were very nice but you have to book. A couple of other things. The room got chilly during the night with thermostat set at 70, the I realised that the large drape curtains went all the hay down to the floor, so covering up the radiators, so warming up the windows nicely. The other, no hand rails for getting out of over bath shower, at age 78 bit tricky. Lastly, super king bed, super king duvet with king size duvet.

Mixed feelings. Great location, wonderful building and excellent staff. We booked 2 rooms, one should have been on the ground floor but it was on a lower ground floor with 18 steps and we were left with no option but to help our friend up and down the stairs, the hotel is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues and we should have been told on booking. Not sure if anything was on the booking site about this but don't remember seeing anything. The ground floor room was huge with a huge shower room. The large TV really really needed a chart on how to switch it on and off as it had some quirks, the room has also been used by dog visitors as there were loads of dog hairs around the room so not suitable for anyone with allergies, also house keeping had left a dried up tea bag in the tea pot...not great but lucky our friend only drinks coffee, there's a fridge and bath robes. Overall this is a lovely room apart from the smell of drains which the staff were great about, and helped to get rid of most of the smell. The staff are great but not sure why they have to put their tips through the till and pay tax and maybe the hotel takes a little .. never been anywhere this happens. Our room was on the first floor and a disappointment much smaller, no fridge which was a suprise as there was room for one. The outlook was an interesting one of the flat roof extension and can confirm the roof in good condition, and the crows in the morning , early morning did wake me up as the trees next to the extension was there favourite spot to wake everyone. Main carpets need a deep clean and some replacing but understand that 2 years of COVID means the money chest is a little tight. The breakfasts are lush..10/10 good choices but evening meal I would find a local pub, too expensive for what you get and for me over seasoned with salt, my friends found it ok but I would not recommend the main dinner menu Overall the hotel could be fantastic with some lovely original features and lovely staff. Would I go back...not sure but differently would book a rear room with views towards the sea.

Awful. My friends and my mum had booked 2 lodges for a night for my hen do. Upon arrival we went for drinks and lunch. The lady who served us our drinks at the bar was very rude and was telling off another member of staff, in front of us, whilst making our drinks. When we got to our table we were all having a slight chuckle about it because of the absurdity of it. There were only 2 tables, us and another table of two. We had booked to go in the swimming pool, and we were anxious as the food took an incredibly long time to come out. All we asked for was picky bits too, and no main courses. The waitresses couldn’t care less and when we were asking where our food was there was a blunt sorry. I felt disappointed that this was how my hen weekend was starting. We went to the pool which was nice and then went back to the lodges. The lodges were easily the best part of the weekend, very clean with a lovely view. We went to dinner in the main hotel which was where it properly went downhill. It was a busy evening and we had a waitress who was incredibly honest but in a way that was not good for customer service. She advised that we should order drinks and food at the same time because they only have one barman and they are too busy. We did and 25 minutes went by with no sign of drinks. I can understand that, we were in a group of 7 and a few of our party ordered cocktails so that was fine. The problem was that we ordered tap water at the same time and we asked for it again but it still didn’t come. My mum went up to the barman and asked for the water and he just replied ‘we have only one jug’. Mum said that’s fine and brought it over. Our food came first, which was fine. Wasn’t anything special. Our drinks finally came but they took longer as they blamed us for changing our minds with a drink but it was actually because they had ran out of aperol (two of my party had asked for aperol spritz). My mum tried to get ahold of the waitress again and she replied, I need to clear this table and seat these guests first. Which is fine, but it was so abrupt and solidified the fact that they were prioritising other customers over us. We felt that because we were younger, they thought they could leave us longer as we would be less likely to complain. The attitude quickly shifted though when they realised it was my hen do. Which again proves that they weren’t fussed until they realised it was for a big occasion and they were ruining it. The waitress said to my mum, i’ll get the hen a glass of Prosecco for the occasion to which my mum responded with ‘why not a bottle?’ and the waitress said that was fine. We felt it was a massive insult just to give us one glass of prosecco in which all of my party would have to sit there with no drinks (as the wait time was something else) and watch me drink it. They bought over the prosecco which was nice and then we really wanted to leave as the experience was just not nice. We got the bill and we had been charged an extra £40 for ‘adult swim’. We asked about it and they said they had a new system and it wasn’t their fault. We left, finding the whole thing a farce and enjoyed the rest of the night not in the hotel. That was when I enjoyed my hen do. We were woken up at 9am the next morning (my mum paid for late check out as with the nature of hen do’s we might’ve needed the lay in!) by our phones in our rooms ringing. It was reception asking my mum for proof of payment. (my mum paid in full as soon as we got there!!!) They made my mum read out exactly how much she paid (in front of me!) and were completely unsympathetic about the fact we had paid extra to get a bit more sleep. Now we were all awake because of their mistake! Yay! My mum went into reception to complain when we checked out. The receptionist was in complete agreement that we had had an unacceptable weekend. She said that a manger would be in touch. My hen do was on the 6/9/24 and we heard off them yesterday, saying that there wasn’t anymore they could do. So thank you, Trenython Manor for...

We booked here months ago as we planned a trip to Cornwall to do many things including visiting the Eden project, and relaxing in a spa hotel for a few days. Upon arrival the hotel and reception looked lovely. We checked in, and wanted to use the spa facilities after a big lunch earlier in the day. We were informed that the spa was only to be used if we had booked in, even the use of the pool. So there was no space for the duration of our stay. We were then told the restaurant was closed, only open on Saturday and Sunday nights. If we wanted food, we needed to order bar food in the bar, but last orders was at 7.45! 80% of the tables were already reserved due to a quiz that night, so even if we just wanted a drink we would need to book a table. Surely this is not what was advertised online?

We went to our room, which was actually nice and spacious, and we're advised to go for a walk around the hotel on their woodland walk. Sounded like a good idea after our initial disappointment. We went to where the walk was, but it was closed off with barricades, why tell us we can use it then?? We talked our options over and decided to ask the hotel whether we could stay the 1 night, not 2 which we booked in for, and book somewhere else the next night. This was refused due to their "cancellation policy".

We spoke very calm to the reception manager who explained it was too late to cancel, but now there was spaces for 1 hour only to use the pool. Where was this previously? And only for 1 hour? After stating our massive disappointment we were offered 50% refund on our second night stay, which I reluctantly accepted.

We went out as planned to the Eden project the next day, came back and our room had not been cleaned for some reason, another issue. When I then went to reception to discuss how I was to be getting the refund offered, nobody knew anything! The manager was off for 2 days, and they wanted us to leave for them to check after we had left the hotel before processing this. Why was nothing said to anyone if they are not there?

The biggest issue is not the hotel, and the staff, especially Jeanette on reception were very friendly. The biggest issue is that the hotel is advertised as a spa hotel with usual hotel amenities like a restaurant that can't be used! If we had known this, fair enough, we would have booked elsewhere, but nothing was said on their website about this.

So you can't use the spa, no restaurant apart from weekends, bar food stops at 7.45, no hot food allowed in rooms at all, no room cleaning service, and their advertised walk was closed. Not a great impression for a lovely looking hotel, and will never stay here, or recommend this place to anyone....
