We were looking for a campsite for 6 nights as the weather forecast looked to be sunny. We found Wern Mill Caravan Park. My wife wanted a site where she could have an evening meal in the sun with a glass of wine to fully relax. We called the site and the owner told us that he would give us a sunny pitch. We asked to not be right next to the children’s play area as we really needed some peace and quiet. The owner advised that the track was one way only. The owner said that he would ensure we had a sunny pitch and said that there weren’t any children there so we thought it would be ideal and so we booked. We received an email the next day showing that we were being upgraded to a VIP pitch so we were quite excited about this. When we arrived we saw that the site was quite compact and drove on to the VIP pitch, but you actually lost about half of the pitch as it was on an incline which you couldn’t use some of it, in addition it was not possible to hammer in hard ground tent pegs for the awning as it appeared there was a concrete base. The difference between the VIP pitch and a standard pitch was that you had fast WiFi and also a water tap on the pitch, but no waste water, plus a light. In my opinion it didn’t warrant the extra £14 per night as the site was quite small and everything you needed was pretty close by anyway. As we were setting up and as we sat down to relax we had the joy of children screaming which was really disappointing. There is also a problem with road noise on this site as there is quite a busy road that runs directly above the site and is used pretty much all day and evening. We had been advised that we would be allocated a sunny pitch as we like to have our evening meal outside to catch the evening sunshine, however on our VIP pitch the sun was gone by about 5.20pm as the site is edged by very tall trees that the sun sets behind. We were pitched on the second row of 5, pitched in front of the bank with the road above, if you were on the first row closest to the bank then you lost the sun even sooner. The fourth and fifth rows got all of the sun and the third row got a fair amount of sun too. There were several free pitches on the fourth row that the owner could have sited our caravan on which would have given us more sun but we felt that he wanted to keep these free for people who may have enquired about seasonal pitches. We noted that when some tourers arrived during our visit, none, including us had the luxury of the sunny pitches on the fourth row. On the positive side, the toilet/shower block was very clean, however, the velux windows were open all of the time, my wife felt it was too cold to have a shower which is a shame really. The grounds were kept very tidy and there is a shop and a bar under a canopy. The owner told us that there is a one way system along the road and there are signs on your way out that tells you to turn left only. This leads you down some narrow lanes to find a way out. This isn’t strictly true as the one way system only extends about 50 metres, just off the main road and then there isn’t any restrictions and it is easier to get back on the main road if you turn right out of the site. We were booked in for 6 nights but only stayed 5 nights as to be honest we were getting a bit fed up with not been able to eat in the sunshine in the evening and there was pressure to eat breakfast and lunch early to eat dinner early. So, we set off home a day early. We did not complain or request a refund for the night, we just went home. That afternoon we received a call from the owner who asked why we had left a day early. My wife explained about the sun and that it was important to us for an evening meal and that he had told her that the pitch would be sunny and his tone changed, basically saying that he had given us a VIP pitch and was not happy that we were not happy and so we ended the call. My wife even explained that I had cancer and expressed the importance of her having a relaxing break and a meal in the sun and he showed no concern at all. Would we return?...
Read moreLiked: I have given a lot of thought to my review, I like to give a honest and fair review when asked to do so. This site is well kept good facilities including a dog shower which is a brilliant idea. We didn't use it as recently lost our beloved Husky. The only criticism I would add re facilities is shower is push button and I timed it at 6 to 10 seconds on different days also for Motorhome owners with grey waste no disposal on site. However didn't bother us as next site did so we dumped on arrival. But worth bearing in mind. Ensure an empty tank prior to arrival. Now I guess we have to rate site on our stay and experience during our visit. I'm sorry to say we hated most of it, harsh I hear you say but hear me out please. We were on pitch 27 close to entrance and the narrow part of center area see photo. On the pitches are signs 'Please do not cross over occupied pitches ' No chance there were kids racing around on bicycles one almost took out my wife as we were winding out our Motorhome canopy. And the people behind playing bat and ball which kept on gong on our area constantly and they would pick it up with no excuse me or sorry. So I got to a point of asking as they were speaking in a foreign language could they read and understand the sign. Yes was the reply so I asked them as we respected thir pitch and walked the long way around to facilities that they would respected ours and play further into play area. This was Saturday and a scorching day and we had camper doors and windows open. Ther response was to shut my van doors to which I said it ain't happening. Then we had a ball hit our van which put small dent in and then a whistling throwing bomb hit our window and broke that too. The window is plastic double glazed with air gap. Well now it doesn't and the gap is gone and plastic touching each other. And is now grey & foggy see photos. This was witnessed by a mature couple sitting outside there caravan behind us. Also a single lady with a silver camper in pitch 26 who was right under the flight path. See photos. My camper may not be new but it had no damage as one owner and very low miles. And was £40,000 a lot of money for us. Anyway I feel a play area should be fenced or no ball games or a separate area altogether. As we were well away from the center. It spoilt our holiday. We would ha e left early but couldn't find another site in between our next stop. If you value your vehicle I would say go ahead and book but ask for a pitch outside of the center area.
Disliked: Play area although OK for playing with equipment provided ball games and throwing toys like these whistle bombe, rugby balls and aeroplanes should be for elsewhere. And we take granddaughters with us sometimes so we are NOT...
Read moreWe have been visiting Wern Mill over the last few years as a family of 4 with our 2 young teenagers for week-long holidays and weekend breaks, it’s clear to say we thoroughly enjoy coming back each time and literally ‘switch off’ as soon as we arrive. Although we frequently visit as a family, we have also invited friends that have stayed in the site’s shepherd’s hut, which is built and kitted out to a high standard, our friends had a great time and will return.
The park is set in a perfect location with the long sweeping beach just a short scenic walk through the trees (a small car park is available at the top of the beach if you prefer to drive), which is safe for the children to take their paddle board down on their own and back, with a dog wash area at the site that they can wash down their boards and life jackets. New Quay centre is just a little further and is a nice calming walk on the beach, as long as the tide isn’t all the way in. New Quay is picturesque with a range of eating in or out options, a few shops and bars, fresh homemade ice cream and boat trips for dolphin watching. If you wish to drive and head outside of New Quay, there are plenty of options in and around the slightly larger area of Aberaeron, which again, is very local and quick to get to, with a bus stop just up the road from the site.
The park itself is blissfully nestled amongst the rustling of trees, it truly is a gem of a place! The park has been upgraded in the last few years, with modern finishes and everything is maintained in working order. There is always new features being added to the site, with a quaint bar serving plenty of drink choices, accompanied by two pergolas equipped with walls and heaters within. They frequently invite a mix of food vans of various cuisines and sometimes live singers during peak times, while the campsite also hosts a small shop at reception with all the basics needed, fresh local produce, and a playing park to keep the littler ones entertained.
I could go on about the positives of Wern Mill, but as for negatives… there isn’t really any I could mention, this is due to the hardworking, friendly and extremely helpful owners that go out of their way to please their campers, honestly, the service provided by the family run business is up there with the best. They are always approachable, prepared to answer questions and ready to help with a smile on their face, and if that’s not enough, the seasonal campers will always be there and offer help if they can, it’s a great community feeling with everyone there to enjoy and relax. The campsite truly is a step above the rest, but it’s the owners that really sell the site and make you want...
