The staff were very polite to start with and explained the gas wasn't working in the kitchen so they had a limited menu. We had four kids with us and explained as long as they did children's meals it would be ok. The only kids meals they did came as a package with a drink and dessert for £8.95 which seemed dear but it was getting late and we had a long motorway drive so just went with it. But what the staff did not tell us is they obviously not only didn't have gas in the kitchen but also didn't have a competent chef who could manage the total of four other couples that came in to eat in the restaurant whilst we were there (not what I would call busy). We waited around 45 minutes to receive burnt pizza and chips, with crust that nearly took out my niece's tooth, so they only ate the middle, and i got chicken panini when I'd ordered a vegetarian one, so i gave the chicken to the kids and just ate the bread and salad. Also we hadn't even been offered the included childrens drinks at this point. We regrettably didn't complain at this point however as we did not have the time to wait another 40 minutes for them to bring anything else. After the meal I asked if we could order the kids deserts and if there was a wait on them as we needed to go. The waiter took our order and said they'd be quick. However 20 minutes later no one had even cleared the table and we were still waiting for the kids ice cream. There was nobody even in the restaurant to ask. So I went to the bar and asked for the bill as we couldn't wait any longer. We then got quite rudely told to go pay at the bar. No discount was given for us not receiving the desserts, have burnt pizza, the wrong meal given, the limited menu or the fact after being there nearly two hours and the kids were still waiting for a dessert. The only response we got "was well did you eat it" not exactly a measure of what I call a good restaurant. So if you have all the time in the world and want to pay £10 for a meal that is mostly "edible" provided you are not vegetarian, after waiting nearly an hour for it, ...
Read moreI purchased a Twycross zoo package with the hotel, I was assured on two separate occasions that I would be able to come early on the morning of the stay to get my zoo tickets so we could go that day instead of the morning after the stay. On arrival and after a 2 and a half hour journey I was told that wasn't possible. I argued my case and was told that I could but would have to pay £65 refundable deposit (which luckily I had spare, being a single mother that might not have always been the case), I was assured this would be refunded the following day and go straight back into my account. I was assured there was a restaurant menu in the room whcih there wasnt. We ere placed in a hotel room that was next to a staff only door, what ever was happening in there caused a lot of noise until later into the evening. The beds were extremely uncomfortable. On check out I was told I had to pay £13.50 for my breakfast whcih was fine but explained to the gentleman that the previous day I paid a deposit of £65 and was told that I would just be refunded the difference (£65 less the cost of breakfast) - he then spoke to me like I was an idiot and said that £65 had never been taken, anyway this argument went back and forth but he was adamant that I had to pay the £13.50 and the £65 never left my bank but was just on hold and would be released immediately. As I expected would happen the money was not 'released' for another 5 days which is less then ideal when it is my last week off with my daughter in the summer holidays. I wont be returning as it was a disaster from start to finish. However, I would recommend Twycross Zoo!! It...
Read moreI've never had a bad experience with a hotel until this one.
With the area being fairly dead of hotels/restaurants, I previously contacted the hotel about veggie options in their restaurant, and was reassured there would be plenty of choice.
When we arrived there was a severe lack of veggie options, and also a function on meaning they scrapped most of their meat options from the menu, meaning neither myself or partner could order food. This meant we had to go out in the rain hungry, looking for pubs. It took us about 30 mins to find a pub that wasn't busy and could actually seat us - the Appleby Inn, which is also a hotel and serves absolutely lovely food! I would like to add that the walk back to the hotel involved a pitch black street with no lighting, cars going 50mph and no path - a very unpleasant and scary experience!
We tried to complain about the inconvenience and lack of communication, but staff were not interested. To add to things, the room was incredibly cold! And that is coming from a couple that get absolutely boiling on a night, so something really is off there. We did try the heater, although it gave off a really strong burning smell and didn't seem...
